Online University Arts & Sciences Instructor - Criminology (26:078)

Term of App't: Jan - Apr 2027 (each contract will be a total of 96 hours total)

Reporting to: Dean, Academics

$50.07 – $56.75/hr, depending on experience and qualifications as per the BCGEU Faculty Collective Agreement. Temporary employees receive an additional 2% on all regular earnings in lieu of benefits, 6% vacation pay and 4.2% statutory holiday pay included with each pay day. Employees in this division have the opportunity to enroll in the College Pension Plan, with contributions matched by the Employer. 

NLC requires one, or more sessional online instructor(s) to teach the sections as indicated below – with each contract consisting of approx. 96 hours. Although the contract(s) begin in December to allow for preparation time, course delivery will begin January 5th.

CRIM 135: Intro to Canadian Law & Legal - This course will introduce the student to the Canadian legal system. The student will gain a historical perspective of the development of Canadian law, Canadian court systems, the Canadian constitution, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms plus an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of judges and lawyers in the legal system. The student will also examine legal principles and doctrines such as precedent, legal research, legal reasoning, and statutory interpretation as well as explore how these principles and doctrines are applied to the fields of contract, tort, administrative, family, and criminal law. Tue/Thu 2:45 p.m. - 4:10 p.m.

CRIM 210: Youth/Criminal Justice System - This course will examine the historical definitions of youth deviance and criminality in conjunction with the evolution of youth justice laws in Canada. Societal views and reaction to juvenile delinquency and crime will be discussed as well as basic theoretical perspectives. Risk and protective factors, such as family, school, peers and social economic status, and how they affect youth crime rates, will be discussed. The process of moving youth through the criminal justice system, from police interactions to court attendance and corrections, will also be reviewed. Schedule to be determined.

CRIM 235: Criminal Law - This course will introduce the student to the basic principles of Canadian criminal law, the concepts of actus reus, mens rea, regulatory offences, modes of participation in crime, inchoate crimes, mental disorder as a defense, and defenses to a criminal charge.  Schedule to be determined.

Required:

• Master's Degree in Criminology
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Committed to student motivation and achievement; and
• Ability to collaborate as an effective team member.

Preferred:

• PhD in Law, with a focus on criminal law.
• The Provincial Instructor Diploma Program or an equivalent credential in adult education, or a readiness to pursue such a credential.
• Previous instructional experience in a post-secondary environment;
• Experience using learning management systems (LMS) and teaching through multiple delivery modalities, and
• Experience instructing a culturally diverse group of students, including Indigenous and international students.
