Job Overview

Operate the vessel crane in a safe and efficient manner working within the design specifications and environmental limits of the crane. Responsible for the first line maintenance of cranes and relevant lifting equipment. Also, performs and directs lifting operations.

Qualifications/Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Bridge Watchman Certificate of Competence
• Marine Emergency Duties
• Transport Canada Marine Medical
• Marine First Aid and CPR
• Crane Operator Certificate (API RP2D)
• Must pass Physical, Drug Screen and Background Check.
• H2S Alive
• WHMIS 2015
• Confined Space Entry
• Fall Protection
• 3 years experience as a Crane Operator in a relevant field or equivalent training in the position or one level below
• One month of mentoring/familiarization required for transfer to OSVs
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate (TDG)
• Vessel Personnel with Security Responsibilities (Offshore Fleet)

Responsibilities

• Operate the vessel crane as qualified in a safe and efficient manner working within the design specifications and environmental limits of the crane
• Be conversant and utilize appropriate company procedures for all lifting operations and ensures the inspection of all lifting equipment prior to use
• Manage heavy or complex lifts according to company policy and procedure
• Ensure Company approved crane signals are utilized
• Transfer equipment to and from supply vessels and assist in maintaining accurate records of all deck cargo loaded and back loaded
• Assist in keeping a running inventory of slings and lifting equipment in use as per lifting gear register. Record and remove damaged equipment
• Supervise correct vessel operating procedures. Report all unsafe activities, situations, and potential hazards to supervisor
• Monitor deck cargo to ensure it is clear of obstructions and correctly sea fastened
• Assist in keeping a running inventory of slings and lifting equipment in use as per lifting gear register. Record and remove damaged equipment
• Participate in all pre-job planning for deck operations
• Complete first line maintenance and on tour checks and document as required
• Conduct performance appraisals for subordinates. Recommend promotion, development or disciplinary action
• Plan and manage the handling of hazardous materials (chemicals, explosives, pollutants, radioactive sources, etc.) and ensure they are stowed in designated areas
• Provide Deckhands with relevant instructions for current and future operations
• Assist in the care and maintenance of the vessel's machinery, tools and accommodation, ensuring all work areas are maintained in a safe condition
• Ensure that approved vessel operating procedures are adhered to at all times. Report all unsafe activities, situations, and potential hazards to supervisor
• Ensure housekeeping is maintained in assigned areas
• Mentor, develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent to work in their current job positions and where appropriate coached and prepared for the next position
• Direct or participate in all pre-job plans for critical deck operations
• Actively participate in weekly vessel and departmental safety meetings
