Data Consultant

Overview

We are strengthening enterprise-wide data governance using Microsoft Purview in a low‑maturity environment (no catalog, inventory, or formal definitions today). This is a hands‑on, execution-focused role: configure scans and classification, validate results, and implement retention/disposition settings while collaborating closely with the BSA, data stewards, architects, and compliance. The position requires practical ownership of governance configuration and validation work, but the hiring approach accepts two realistic market tradeoffs given the current budget (see Recruiter Guidance).

Must‑Haves

• 5+ years in data governance, metadata management, or senior data engineering with governance responsibilities.
• Hands-on experience configuring Microsoft Purview OR proven, hands-on experience implementing governance in Collibra or Informatica (must include tool configuration tasks, not just advisory exposure).
• Demonstrable experience with data classification, sensitivity labeling, and retention concepts; must show examples of tuning rules and validating outcomes.
• Experience onboarding and scanning multiple data sources and verifying lineage/coverage.
• Comfortable working autonomously in ambiguous environments and able to escalate governance design questions to the BSA or Data AVP when needed.

Nice‑to‑Haves

• Financial services or regulated-industry experience.
• Azure ecosystem experience (ADF, Databricks, Synapse, ADLS) and familiarity integrating Purview with these services.
• Exposure to monitoring tools (Datadog) or governance maturity models.

Key Responsibilities

Purview Configuration & Execution 60%

• Configure and run Purview (or equivalent) scans across cloud and on-prem sources.
• Create and tune classification rules and sensitivity labels; validate and iterate to reduce false positives/negatives.
• Implement retention and disposition settings in the tool (or translate policy into tool configuration).
• Work with engineers to remediate scan gaps and ensure metadata completeness.

Governance Enablement 20%

• Validate classifications with business and compliance stakeholders; translate requirements into tool configurations.
• Document configuration decisions and metadata mapping for future governance work.
• Advise on practical retention and classification policies that meet audit defensibility needs.

Operational Support & Knowledge Transfer 20%

• Help develop runbooks, troubleshooting guides, and training artifacts for data stewards (BSA leads operationalization).
• Deliver configuration handover details and lessons learned at project close.
