An exciting opportunity awaits you in Banff. This position supports Urgent Mental Health services out of the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital. Reporting to the manager and clinical supervisor the Mental Health Clinician is responsible for providing specialized mental health assessment and consultation services in the context of patients presenting by walk in, referral or via EMS, who require urgent crisis assessment and brief intervention in relation to acute mental health issues. Clinicians are responsible for providing mental health assessments, therapeutic interventions, referrals and advocacy. Clinically focused liaison and consultation to colleagues within the hospital and with community service providers is also required. Clinicians are required to have awareness and sensitivity to working with diverse populations. Good interpersonal skills, flexibility and an ability to work independently are essential. A good working knowledge of community agencies, and programs is an asset. The mental health clinician may also consult with inpatient staff at the hospital on cases that could be referred to the community mental health program in Canmore/Banff, which includes children, adolescents, families, and adults.

As a Mental Health Clinician, you will work as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team collaborating on the delivery of care for the needs of individuals, families and/or communities. You will be responsible for the intake, clinical interviews and screening of clients with addiction and mental health disorders. You will liaise with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and work collaboratively with other team members as required. You may have the opportunity to participate in program planning, development and to provide supervision to practicum students. This position is open to Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Registered Social Workers, Registered Psychologists, and Occupational Therapists.

Required Qualifications

Completion of one of the following programs: a Master's degree in Psychology, a Bachelor's degree in Social Work incorporating education in mental health assessment, brief counseling, and crisis intervention, a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy with similar educational components, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing with training and experience in mental health assessment, crisis intervention, and brief counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in Psychiatric Nursing. Active or eligible for registration with the applicable Alberta regulatory college.

Additional Required Qualifications

3 – 5 years’ experience in Addiction and Mental Health, including 1-3 years' experience supporting urgent mental health services, PES, or walk in. Experience working with multidisciplinary team and community agencies. Experience working with diverse populations. Solid knowledge foundation of intervention and treatment modalities relevant to clinical disorders and psychosocial and environmental problems, including single session model. Strong critical thinking skills, assessment and intervention skills. Ability to manage a wide variety of clinical situations with varying levels of acuity and a heterogeneous client population. Solid knowledge foundation of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and ability to formulate an accurate provisional diagnosis. Comprehensive knowledge of relevant community resources and legislation. Strong mental health assessment, crisis management and counselling skills. High degree of creativity and flexibility as well as the ability to work independently. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; high level of interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with Connect Care. Experience working in rural mental health. Aware of community resources as applicable to the Community of Banff.
