Position: Young Parent Support Worker

Work Location: 40 Begbie Street, New Westminster, B.C.

Wage: $29.00 per hour

Hours: 35 hours per week

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

The Opportunity

We are seeking a passionate and committed Young Parent Support Worker to join the Young Parent Program within our Family Services team. This position serves pregnant and parenting youth and young adults (under 26 years), providing an array of support services to mitigate the risks for young parents and improve life outcomes for both the young parent and their child(ren).

The Young Parent Support Worker conducts assessments, service planning and implementation for clients of the program, while working in collaboration with other service professionals in the community who are involved with the young parent family. The position aids clients in identifying, understanding and overcoming personal/family challenges, and in establishing and achieving realistic goals, with special focus on parenting skills and child development. Services are provided on an outreach basis.

What You’ll Do

• Work with families using a person-centered, strengths-based approach to prepare case histories, assess strengths and challenges, prepare service plans, deliver a range of services, and evaluate interventions.
• Engage with pregnant or parenting youth/young adults in the community on an outreach basis.
• Plan, prepare, and conduct individual and group support sessions with parents and their children.
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of community resources to meet clients’ needs. Refer clients to appropriate programs, as necessary.
• Provide liaison, education, and advocacy to clients, other professionals, and the community.
• Maintain accurate client files, ensuring that all required documentation is complete and meets professional standards. Complete reports and statistical gathering as required.
• Participate in supervision and team meetings, staff training, and professional development opportunities.

What We Are Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in the social sciences
• At least one-two years of previous work experience with youth, young adults, and/or young parents; experience in an early childhood environment and/or community-based organization is an asset
• Experience working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds
• Knowledge of child development, positive parenting and family dynamics
• Strong verbal and written communication, boundaries, and problem solving skills
• Good organization, time and case management skills
• Ability to work effectively with team members, social workers, and other providers
• Flexibility to work some evening and/or weekend hours, as needed
• Ability to pass a Criminal Records check with vulnerable sector clearance
• Current First-Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certifications
• Vehicle to be used in daily duties and clean driver’s abstract; valid Class 5 driver’s license is preferred
• Fluency in a second language would be an asset
