Main Function: Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Paramedic Services, this position leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of wellness strategies, programs and health promotion that support psychological and physical health and safety of Paramedic Services staff. The role provides confidential support, and early intervention to employees and teams, collaborating with the Health, Safety and Return to Work Services team to support recovery and return-to-work processes. Contributes to a proactive culture of health promotion, through education, awareness, and continuous improvement of programs and practices.

Objectives

• Deliver and enhance health promotions programs that support physical, mental and psychological health awareness, early identification, and timely access to confidential supports that align with psychological health and safety standards.
• Strengthen early intervention and recovery efforts by identifying wellness concerns, supporting sustainable return-to-work plans, and enhancing overall workforce resilience.
• Promote a culture of health and wellness through education communication, engagement initiatives that increase awareness, build capacity and encourage the use of available supports.

Duties

• Deliver or coordinate health promotion education sessions for Paramedic Services employees, including promoting awareness and understanding of available supports and resources.
• Deliver confidential employee support services, safeguarding privacy and fostering a safe and trusted environment.
• Coordinate and support the Paramedic Services Peer Support Network (PSN), including member recruitment, onboarding in collaboration with the PSN Mental Health Professional, training coordination, meeting scheduling and the maintenance of team information, and quarterly statistics while providing oversight of program activities.
• Analyze calls for early intervention, providing information to the Health, Safety and Return to Work Services section.
• Coordinate and support responses to critical incidents including stress intervention, defusing, and post-incident follow-up, and the timely deployment of appropriate internal and external resources.
• Promote early identification and support for operational stress injuries (OSIs) by working with Health, Safety and Return to Work Services and external partners to facilitate access to supports and deliver targeted health promotion and prevention initiatives (e.g., NeckUp CheckUp, Warrior Health).
• Assist with the Facility Dog Program.
• Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of paramedic health promotion programs and initiatives by monitoring outcomes, contributing to evaluation processes and providing recommendations to enhance effectiveness and alignment with organizational priorities.
• Co-lead the Paramedic Wellness Committee, assist with establishment of, and act as a resource to other City of Greater Sudbury (City) Wellness Committees.
• Support employee engagement in health promotion initiatives by collaborating with Wellness Committees, developing and distributing promotional materials and organization-wide messaging, coordinating health promotion related contracts and maintaining the Paramedic Intranet site.
• Develop operating budgets and manage expenditures for wellness-related initiatives.
• Collaborate with the Health, Safety and Return to Work Services and external providers, as appropriate, to support the prevention of work-related injuries and illnesses, identify emerging trends and workplace risk factors, and contribute to recovery and return to work planning.
• Maintain up to date knowledge of best practices in Paramedic Services and actively participate in provincial committees focused on wellness and occupational stress injury (OSI) prevention.
• Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the City’s Health and Safety policies and the applicable provincial legislation listed therein.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Training

• Community college diploma in Emergency Care/Paramedicine from a recognized college with Canadian accreditation.
• Maintain certification as a Primary Care Paramedic in the Province of Ontario.
• Certification as an Advanced Care Paramedic in the Province of Ontario considered an asset.
• Additional education initiatives to update and expand competencies in Human Resources Management, Health Promotions and Wellness.
• Certified or must become certified as a Road to Mental Readiness Trainer.

Experience

• At least five (5) years of directly related experience as a Paramedic.
• Minimum of two (2) years of related experience coordinating, administering, and delivering health promotion initiatives.
• Minimum of two (2) years of related experience assisting employees with their early and safe return to work, and recovery at work, post-mental health, or physical injury.

Knowledge Of

• Highly competent in keyboarding, with a proven ability related to computer software and administrative systems in a Windows environment (e.g. files maintenance, word processing, computerized spreadsheet applications, presentation software, information input and retrieval, etc.).
• Best practices within psychological safety and wellness initiatives.
• Applicable legislation and related regulations.
• Horizontal linkages to other relevant governmental levels and services as well as the private sector.
• Canadian Standards Association (CGS) Z1003.1:18 – Psychological health and safety in the paramedic service organization.
• Mental Health Commission of Canada National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.

Language

• Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
• French verbal and written skills an asset.

Other Requirements

• Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid Class G driver’s licence, and have an acceptable driving record.
