Veterinary Technician Assistant to join our Cardiology team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This position combines hands-on patient care with cardiology referral coordination, offering the opportunity to work alongside veterinary cardiologists and Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) in a collaborative specialty hospital.

Responsibilities

Cardiology Referral & Administrative Coordination

• Coordinate cardiology referrals, appointments, and follow-up visits with clients and referring veterinary hospitals.
• Obtain, organize, and review medical records, laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, ECGs, and previous echocardiograms.
• Ensure referral records are complete, accurate, and available to the Cardiology team before scheduled appointments.
• Communicate with referring veterinarians and hospitals to obtain outstanding records, diagnostic results, and referral information.
• Provide clients with appointment instructions, preparation requirements, and general Cardiology service information.
• Maintain accurate referral, scheduling, and patient information within the hospital's practice-management system.
• Coordinate patient transfers and referrals between Cardiology, Emergency/ICU, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and other hospital departments.
• Assist with preparing cardiology reports, referral documentation, and correspondence.
• Track outstanding referral requirements and communicate potential delays or concerns to the appropriate team members.

Cardiology Clinical & Patient Care Support

• Assist with patient intake, medical history collection, and preparation for cardiology appointments and procedures.
• Support veterinary cardiologists and RVTs with echocardiography, ECGs, blood pressure measurements, and other cardiac diagnostics.
• Assist with patient restraint, positioning, and preparation for diagnostic imaging and procedures.
• Prepare and maintain cardiology equipment, examination areas, and treatment spaces.
• Assist with patient monitoring before, during, and after diagnostic procedures.
• Support sedation and anesthesia preparation and monitoring under the direction of the veterinary team.
• Assist with blood collection, catheter placement, medication administration, and other clinical procedures as directed and within your training and scope of practice.
• Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns to the attending veterinarian or RVT.
• Assist with patient transfers, hospitalization, recovery, and discharge.
• Maintain accurate patient records, treatment documentation, and SmartFlow treatment sheets when applicable.
• Provide client education and discharge instructions as directed by the veterinary team.
• Support safe and efficient patient flow throughout the Cardiology service.

Teamwork & Communication

• Work closely with veterinary cardiologists, RVTs, Veterinary Assistants, client service representatives, and referring veterinarians.
• Maintain clear communication regarding patient status, appointment scheduling, referral information, and outstanding requirements.
• Support effective handoffs between administrative and clinical team members.
• Demonstrate compassion and professionalism when assisting clients whose pets have serious or complex cardiac conditions.
• Help maintain organized referral processes and efficient departmental workflows.
• Participate in team meetings, departmental initiatives, and process improvements.
• Provide additional administrative or clinical support based on departmental needs.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Veterinary Assistant, Veterinary Technician Assistant, or in a similar veterinary hospital role preferred.
• Experience in a specialty, referral, emergency, or general practice veterinary hospital is an asset.
• Interest in veterinary cardiology, specialty medicine, and advanced patient care.
• Veterinary Technician education or RVT status is an asset but not required.
• Previous experience coordinating veterinary referrals, appointments, or medical records is an asset.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple referrals, appointments, and administrative priorities while maintaining accuracy.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a compassionate, client-focused approach.
• Comfortable assisting with patient handling, restraint, and clinical procedures within your training and scope of practice.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced specialty hospital while supporting both clinical and administrative responsibilities.
• Proficiency with computer systems and electronic medical records; experience with ezyVet and SmartFlow is an asset.
• Willingness to learn cardiology-specific terminology, diagnostics, procedures, and workflows.
• Ability to maintain patient and client confidentiality.
• Reliable, adaptable, and committed to maintaining a positive and collaborative team environment.
• Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.
