Emera NL is the owner and operator of the Maritime Link, one of Atlantic Canada’s most complex and sophisticated electricity assets, enabling the interconnection between Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia through a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system.

This role offers a unique opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer to play a hands-on technical leadership role, gain deep exposure to HVDC systems, and help shape the future asset strategy of a nationally significant transmission link.



Role Description:


As Senior Electrical Engineer, you will serve as the technical authority for Emera NL’s HVDC transmission asset. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will provide electrical engineering leadership across operations, asset management, inspections, maintenance planning, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role goes well beyond traditional design work, as you will be relied upon to troubleshoot complex issues, work directly with operations and site teams, and help ensure the system continues to operate safely, efficiently, and reliably for decades to come.


Your responsibilities will include:

• Serving as the internal technical expert for the Maritime Link HVDC system, including transmission assets, converter stations, and control systems.
• Reviewing and interpreting vendor documentation, technical studies, reports, and operating procedures.
• Leading inspection strategies, condition assessments, and long-term maintenance planning as OEM support contracts wind down.
• Developing and maintaining risk-based asset management plans to ensure long-term reliability and performance.
• Supporting outage planning and execution, including participation in the annual planned outage and post-outage analysis.
• Working closely with operations teams to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues, providing sound judgement during abnormal or emergency conditions.
• Supporting protection, control, and automation activities in a controls-intensive operating environment.
• Collaborating with internal stakeholders, external contractors, OEMs, and consultants on ongoing operations and future initiatives.
• Contributing engineering input to capital planning, reliability improvements, and potential new infrastructure opportunities.
• Maintaining and enhancing engineering standards, documentation, and technical processes.
• Building internal technical capability and act as a trusted advisor within a lean, ownership-driven team.
• Participating in specialized training and industry forums, including international HVDC user conferences.

Ideal Qualifications:

• Degree in Electrical Engineering with P.Eng. designation or eligibility for registration in Newfoundland & Labrador.
• Strong background in electrical power systems, ideally within utility operations, transmission, protection & controls, automation, or other complex industrial environments.
• Experience supporting operating assets, with a practical understanding of how systems perform in real-world, operational conditions.
• Comfortable working across disciplines, including controls, protection, automation, and systems integration.
• Exposure to HVDC systems is considered an asset; however, a strong electrical foundation is more important, and training will be provided for the right individual.
• Practical, solutions-oriented engineer with an ownership mindset and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Strong communicator who works effectively within a small, highly collaborative team.
• Motivated to build long-term technical depth in a unique and highly specialized power system environment.
