Maintaining our provincial highway infrastructure is no small job.
The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries. The Vehicle Transportation Inspection Division of Public Works is responsible for inspection and compliance of all vehicles that use our highways.
We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service through education and enforcement of Acts and Regulations that pertain to commercial vehicle users in our province.
About Our Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Vehicle Transportation Inspection, the Vehicle Transportation Inspector (Mobile) is charged with protecting the Province’s highway infrastructure and providing a safe travelling environment for the public by ensuring compliance with legislation pertinent to commercial traffic. Duties are carried out by monitoring commercial traffic from mobile patrol units throughout Nova Scotia providing coverage on all classes of highways on a twenty-four-hour basis.
The Vehicle Transportation Inspector is also responsible for technical advice and assistance to Department staff and the public involved in various resource activities. This position contributes to the development and/or implementation of policies and procedures, as well as occupational health and safety principles for the Department’s Commercial Vehicle inspection, enforcement, and compliance programs.
Primary Accountabilities
As the Inspector, you are responsible to:
- ensure compliance with a wide range of legislation and regulations related to the protection of our infrastructure by developing and implementing an area enforcement operational plan applicable to commercial vehicles and drivers.
- conduct patrols and audits, respond to complaints, identify the nature of suspected regulatory violations or non-compliance incidents, and determine the appropriate course of action. Actions can include conducting investigations, gathering evidence, issuing warnings, out of service declarations or issuing Summary Offence Tickets. You exercise a wide range of enforcement powers as a Peace Officer such as searching for physical evidence, compelling the production of documents, issuing subpoenas, completing legal documents and supporting prosecutions in court as an expert witness.
- conduct safe stopping and weighing of commercial vehicles roadside, or at the request of industry, using the Department’s portable scales.
- periodically perform speed enforcement focused on Commercial Vehicles, using Department issued equipment.
- ensure industry stakeholders are in compliance with safety related Acts and associated regulations (Motor Vehicle Act, Public Highways Act, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act). This may involve assisting with applying for permits; conducting inspections of vehicles; conducting onsite inspections; investigating incidents of non-compliance and taking the appropriate action.
- respond to requests of local police forces under the direction of management. You typically assist in investigations by examining mandatory documents and records, inspecting the vehicle(s) and cargo, and ensuring the vehicle is in compliance with any legislation specific to commercial motor vehicles.
- assist local police force and Department of Public Works (DPW) with traffic control operations at motor vehicle collisions and restrict access to portions of the highway system due to inclement weather and exceptional moves at the request of management. This includes closures of the Canso Causeway, Tantramar Marsh/Cobequid Pass, and other portions of Nova Scotia’s highway system.
- use measuring tools, platform scales and general operating supplies. Responsible for safe storage of evidence in respect to court cases to guarantee continuity. Responsible for safe storage, maintenance, and use of Department-issued personal protection equipment.
Qualifications And Experience
High school completion plus seven (7) years of related experience in commercial transportation, vehicle repair or vehicle inspection is required; or an appropriate accreditation such as truck/bus transport repair certificate, automobile service technician certification plus five (5) years of related experience as a licensed tradesperson is required.
You must have a valid CVSA NASI Level I Inspector certification, and a minimum of two (2) continuous years of experience in a vehicle compliance station, post most recent Inspector’s Certification for CVSA NASI Level I.
You must be appointed as a Special Constable under the Nova Scotia Police Act.
You must also have completed a division-approved Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) training course.
A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
Strong analytical skills are required to read, interpret and understand various service and repair manuals, Acts, Regulations and technical standards governing the industry. Strong verbal communication skills are required in order provide roadside education to the industry.

This job can be stressful! The successful candidate must have a proven track record of managing highly stressful situations in an extremely fast paced environment. You may also be exposed to fumes, scents, allergens, and adverse weather conditions. May include long hours driving including highway patrol activities. Frequent pulling, prying and lifting involving medium to heavy weight; working in difficult and/or awkward positions.
Additional Information
The primary work area is within Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne County. Travel is a key component of the position, using a department vehicle and work outside the boundaries, across the province is common.
