Restoration and Healing Care Coordinator
Seabird Island Band
Position Summary
Seabird Island is committed to promoting safety, healing, and justice within our community. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Restoration and Healing Care Coordinator to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance client well-being, community safety, and equitable access to justice and social supports.
Under the direction of the Acting Department Manager of Community and Family Wellness, the Restoration and Healing Care Coordinator provides culturally informed care coordination, advocacy, and case management support to community members involved with or affected by the justice system. This role involves coordinating care for clients and families as they move through legal, court, and social service processes; supporting restorative justice pathways; and connecting clients to wraparound supports such as housing, mental health, and employment services. The Restoration and Healing Care Coordinator also builds relationships with justice and community partners, integrates Indigenous teachings into care planning, and supports initiatives that strengthen healing, reintegration, and community well-being. What you'll do
Client Navigation and Advocacy
- Coordinate and advocate for clients and families as they move through justice, legal, and social service systems, ensuring smooth communication and continuity of care.
- Support clients in understanding and following their care plans by helping them navigate court processes, connect with legal aid, understand their rights, and access restorative justice options.
- Attend court hearings, probation meetings, and other justice-related appointments as a support person and advocate.
- Provide direct support services by meeting with clients, families, justice partners, and community practitioners to identify needs, establish goals, and build culturally appropriate service plans.
- Apply active listening skills to build trust, ensure client voices are heard, and create meaningful, client-centered plans.
- Offer system-navigation mentorship that empowers clients to understand care processes, participate actively in their plans, advocate for themselves, and move toward reintegration and healing.
Case Management and Monitoring
- Accept referrals for medium to high-risk adults and youth involved in various stages of the criminal justice system.
- Monitor and track client progress through the justice system and ensure follow-up on required actions.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client files, documenting interactions, progress, and outcomes.
- Meet regularly with the Direct Supervisor to review case progress, assess intervention effectiveness, and participate in case conferences.
Crisis Response and Safety
- Recognize potential client crises and apply sound judgment to analyze circumstances, develop
strategies, and respond effectively. - Ensure that services are conducted in ways that promote the safety of clients and the community.
- Document and report unusual incidents, informing all necessary individuals and agencies.
Mediation and Conflict Resolution
- Utilize mediation skills to help clients resolve conflicts with families, peers, community members, or justice partners.
- Facilitate dialogue between clients and service providers to reduce misunderstandings and strengthen relationships.
- Support restorative justice approaches that emphasize accountability, healing, and reconciliation
Community and Cultural Integration
- Integrate Indigenous culture, teachings, and traditions into referrals, recommendations, and service plans where appropriate.
- Conduct community outreach to raise awareness about restorative justice, alternative measures, and available programs.
- Research and develop information and programming related to building a safe and healthy community with a focus on justice and prevention.
Networking and Collaboration
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with local police, Crown Counsel, Legal Aid, BC Corrections, MCFD, Youth Justice, and other agencies.
- Act as a bridge between clients and systems, removing barriers to access by assisting with applications, referrals, and service navigation.
- Collaborate on enforcement of banishments and monitoring of Lands Code laws when required.
Practical Supports
- Assist clients in setting up appointments and connecting with wraparound services such as housing, mental health, addictions, employment, and cultural resources.
- Provide transportation when necessary to ensure clients can access supports tied to their goals.
Other Duties
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
Working / Special Conditions
- Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
- Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives
- Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.
