Head Hockey Coach

Redeemer University seeks a dynamic individual to lead, organize, direct, and further develop a successful hockey program. The Head Coach must demonstrate the ability to effectively and inspirationally lead a university-level program while fostering a distinctive culture in competitive athletics that trains student-athletes to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ wherever they are called to compete and serve. The Head Coach will lead a team that displays excellence in Christian service, competition, academics, and campus leadership.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include, but are not necessarily limited to:

Coaching

• Schedule, plan, and conduct regular practice sessions during the academic year.
• Provide tactical and technical preparation of the team for competition, including analyzing and sharing game and practice film and traveling with the team to away competitions.
• Develop and implement individual and team training plans that foster student-athlete development and team success, including working with a strength and conditioning coach to design a comprehensive, year-round training program.
• Coordinate the hiring, training, and mentoring of assistant coaches and volunteer assistants in collaboration with the Director of Athletics.
• Ensure the safety of all student-athletes and coaching staff by carefully monitoring activities, equipment, and facilities used by the program.

Recruitment

• Recruit students who align with the University’s mission and the department’s Vertical Purpose and who are academically eligible according to league policies and Redeemer University regulations.
• Conduct off-campus recruiting and talent evaluations as a representative of Redeemer University.
• Work with the Athletic Director, Athletics Department, and Admissions staff to organize and execute multiple official recruiting visits and events each year.

Sport Development

• Work with Athletics Department staff to conduct tryouts, ID camps, and external hockey events (e.g., alumni games) each season.
• Work closely with the Athletics Department to retain a roster of eligible student-athletes.
• Function as an influential team member, working cooperatively with Athletics staff and the broader institution to achieve departmental and university goals.
• Assist in creating a culture that embraces and supports student-athletes and coaches in the pursuit of Christian excellence.

Spiritual Leadership

• Provide consistent opportunities for the spiritual development of student-athletes and coaches within the department’s Vertical Purpose.
• Contribute to the faith development of student-athletes by challenging them to excel as followers of Christ for His glory.
• In collaboration with the Athletics Department, develop and implement opportunities for Christian service through sport.
• Demonstrate Christian values in attitudes, words, and actions that positively reflect the testimony of Jesus Christ and Redeemer University.

Preferred Skills and Attributes: 

• Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, sound administrative abilities, and strong motivational leadership.
• Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, especially during the sports season, including evenings and weekends.
• Knowledge and understanding of hockey rules and league regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and disciple student-athletes in their Christian faith.

Other Requirements:

• Understanding of Redeemer University (mission, values, and Reformed Christian identity)
• Ability and desire to work successfully within a team-oriented department environment.
• Ability to perform light physical tasks, such as setting up nets and training equipment.

Education/Training:

• A college diploma or bachelor’s degree is required, combined with coaching experience in an academic setting (considered an asset).
• First Aid and CPR certification required.
• A minimum of two years of hockey coaching experience at a high-performance level is preferred. Demonstrated success at the college or university level is considered an asset.
• NCCP Competition Stream certification (or equivalent) is preferred.
