Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, Mine Geotechnical, the Senior Engineer, Mine Geotechnical supports the safe and responsible stewardship of open pit mining operations and rock storage facilities at the Highland Valley Copper operations (HVC), the largest Canadian open pit copper mine. The primary active open pit is undergoing a major expansion for the Mine Life Extension project along with operations in three other active pits, and this key role will support monitoring and maintaining geotechnical stability in a hard rock and overburden environment to support safe operations. The Senior Engineer, Mine Geotechnical will liaise closely with Design Engineers and Operations personnel as well as other key internal and external stakeholders, community members and consultants.

There will be abundant opportunities to grow your knowledge base and apply your site-based geotechnical skills and share your expertise with a variety of Teck mine sites, and to participate in periodic Geotechnical Review Boards.

This is a site-based position on a Monday through Thursday (4x10hrs) schedule, subject to change depending on business requirements; both field and office work will be required as part of the role.

Key Responsibilities

• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures, perform regular Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) field visits.
• Develop and maintain relationships with management, technical and operational staff.
• Coordinate geotechnical field programs and support geotechnical analyses and designs implementing the Life of Mine plan.
• Conduct risk-based assessments of geotechnical areas on site and implement mitigation activities.
• Coordinate and review work by external geotechnical consultants to ensure fit for purpose and meets specifications, standards, and codes.
• Perform regular geotechnical inspections of the active and dormant mining areas, report on the inspections, and provide recommendations.
• Manage and compile geotechnical data and complete interpretations and reviews.
• Perform stability analyses for rock slopes, waste dumps, and soil stockpiles.
• Communicate geotechnical risks and solutions in a safety sensitive, dynamic environment.
• Drive project execution across geotechnical engineering, infrastructure construction, and open pit and rock storage facility governance scopes.
• Play an active role in Teck’s geotechnical community of practice through ongoing collaboration with geotechnical personnel at other Teck operations and corporate engineering group.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Geological/Geotechnical, Mining Engineering, or equivalent.
• Registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
• Minimum of five (5) years of geotechnical engineering experience, with preference given to candidates with experience working at an active mine site or consulting for open-pit mining operations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop practical geotechnical recommendations and communicate them effectively to mine planning and operations personnel.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple internal resources, external consultants, and contractors on technical projects.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively within a technical, team-based environment.
• Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and effectively coordinate competing demands.
• Experience or training in project management, geotechnical engineering applications, and mine planning is considered an asset.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and relevant geotechnical software, such as GeoExplorer, Vulcan, AutoCAD, Slide, Dips, Swedge, RocFall, and Phase2/RS2, is considered an asset.
• Valid driver’s licence.

Pay Range: CAD $122,000 - $150,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Working Conditions

• Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
• Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
