Assistant Professor - Ethics and/or Social and Political Philosophy

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The  Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Ethics and/or Social and Political Philosophy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Philosophy or a closely related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in Ethics and/or Social and Political Philosophy. The capacity to teach Feminist Philosophy is an asset for this position. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths .

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated through a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications that meet high international standards; the submitted research dossier; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load. The successful candidate must be able to teach a wide range of courses in philosophy from the introductory to advanced levels, including both undergraduate and graduate courses. Undergraduate classes will be taught at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus, and graduate courses at the tri-campus Graduate Department of Philosophy on the St. George campus. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the regular supervision of graduate students in the tri-campus Graduate Department of Philosophy.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

The expected salary range is $130,000 to $150,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

The advertised position is at the Mississauga Campus. The  Graduate Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus department, consisting of philosophy faculty appointed on all three campuses. Graduate teaching and supervision typically take place on the St. George campus.
