The Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) is a 55-bed, fully accredited facility located just 45 minutes west of Ottawa, serving a catchment area of over 60,000. Come join us! As a result of internal growth, we are hiring a temporary part-time Physician Assistant whose primary functions would be to support med/surgical inpatients and OR assist, but who would also provide casual/vacation coverage for PAs in ER and/or CCC.

Pay Grid: $51.97 - $63.17 /hour

The Physician Assistant works closely with surgeons to provide patient care before, during and after surgical procedures. May act as First or Second Assist. The PA also participates in education sessions and may be asked to attend or participate in other activities related to the development of the Surgical Program. On occasion the PA may be called on to provide support in other units, such as on the Complex Continuing Care Unit or ED.

Duties will include but are not limited to: 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibility of the PA - Surgery is to provide comprehensive direct patient care, within their skill matrix, as a central member of the medical team. Based on the supervising physician or surgeon’s scope of practice, the PA may perform comprehensive assessments, make differential diagnoses, order appropriate testing, and plan the clinical management of patients. The PA provides leadership and support around the establishment of and communication around the physician assistant role on the unit, and actively participates in this program’s development and evaluation. The PA is expected to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration in the provision of patient care. 

The Physician Assistant responsibilities may include any of, but are not limited to the below:

• Assess the physical and mental condition of patients by performing and obtaining comprehensive or problem-focused physical examinations and medical histories.
• Provide direct clinical care to patients and consult with and refer to other health care professionals as indicated.
• May perform invasive procedures specific to scope of practice and provider’s level of expertise as delegated by supervising physician or surgeon.
• Performs follow ups with patients both pre- and post-operatively. May also round on patients in the hospital or see patients in the Emergency Department.
• Participates in all phases of perioperative patient management including outpatient, inpatient and operating room settings.
• Occasional in-scope support of Complex Continuing Care Unit and ER as appropriate and/or required.
• Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment.
• Instruct and educate patients.
• Confer with patients or family members to address any follow-up care concerns.
• Fully document all aspects of patient care and assist with completion of all required documentation.
• Review and document clinical instructions as required.
• Deal regularly with community physicians, other health care providers, and community organizations to facilitate ongoing comprehensive patient care management.
• May be required to perform patient care duties beyond regular schedule based on coverage needs of the department.
• Ensure continuing education, training and development is undertaken to meet CAP and patient care requirements.
• Work collaboratively with all health care providers, patients, and families, to ensure continuity of care is maintained.
• Encourage and ensure good working relationships with all members of the team.
• Work within the Policies and Procedures of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital
• Anticipates patient needs and obstacles. Sets realistic goals for patient care that lead to optimal results, enhanced patient satisfaction and quantifiable service improvements based on evidence-based practice.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Certified through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
• Membership with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA)
• 2 years’ recent experience in a surgical field is as definite asset
• Current CPR or BCLS certification, level ‘C’ is required.
• ACLS certification is an asset.
• Demonstrate good problem solving and analytical skills, creativity, and initiative.
• Ability to communicate and read using English in order to effectively perform essential requirements of the position. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Sound understanding of, and commitment to patient and family-centered care.
• Ability to work independently and as part of the team.
• Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history.
