Vice President (VP) of Software Engineering

Job Summary:

The Vice President of Software Engineering will oversee all aspects of software development, from architecture to implementation, ensuring seamless integration across our ecosystem of web apps, databases, APIs, and IoT devices. This role demands a strategic thinker with a hands-on approach, capable of guiding a diverse team of engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable, and secure solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the latest technologies and best practices in software engineering, along with a proven track record of leadership and innovation.

Leadership and Management:

• Lead, mentor, and grow high-performing engineering teams across functional teams (UI, cloud, backend and IoT).
• Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Execute the technical strategy and roadmap for our ML-enabled, camera-based monitoring technology.
• Manage the software engineering team structure and strategy in alignment with company goals.

Technical Oversight:

• Oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from architecture to deployment.
• Ensure the use of best practices in code quality, testing, and CI/CD.
• Evaluate and integrate new technologies to enhance product functionality and performance.
• Work with software architects to ensure optimum design, scalability and cost.
• Oversee customer user and application access management.
• Oversee cyber security and management of platforms used by software teams (Github, Azure, etc).

Project Management:

• Manage and prioritize engineering projects, ensuring timely and efficient delivery.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data science, ML and hardware engineering teams as well as Operations and Sales teams as-needed.
• Working hand in hand with product management and design teams throughout the product lifecycle to design, develop, test and release projects.
• Monitor progress and adjust plans as necessary to meet evolving business needs.
• Ensure operational costs are monitored, managed and optimized

Quality Assurance:

• Maintain and improve robust testing frameworks and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
• Ensure the highest standards of software quality, security, and reliability.
• Conduct regular code reviews and technical audits.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Proven expertise in web development, cloud computing, API design, and IoT technologies.
• Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies, including Agile and DevOps.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and lead a diverse technical team.
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, Google Cloud), big data, modern programming languages (JavaScript, Python, Java, etc.), and IoT protocols (MQTT, CoAP, etc.).
• Experience leading teams in a fast-paced startup environment.
• Experience in Event Driven Architecture (EDA) is considered an asset.
• Canada Based, preferably in Calgary, AB
