Senior Accounting Clerk/ Accounting Generalist

POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accounting Clerk to join our finance team within a fast‑paced aviation environment. The ideal candidate brings at least 5 years of generalist accounting experience, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a regulated, safety‑driven industry. This role provides critical support in accounting operations and ensures the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial information. This position will work closely with the Accounting Clerk and Accounts Payable Clerk to maintain robust day-to-day accounting operations, and provide the VP Finance with actionable data insights and recommendations for process improvements.

Reports to: Vice-President, Finance

Key Competencies:

• Minimum 5 years of progressive generalist accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting in a Canadian business environment.
• Proficiency with accounting software (Sage) and Microsoft 365.
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excels including data analysis.
• Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving abilities.
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Proactive approach to process improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare detailed variance analyses comparing actual results to budget, estimates, or prior periods.
  • Compile operational financial reports for maintenance, operations and senior leadership teams.
  • Contribute to audit readiness by maintaining well-organized working papers and documentation.
  • Support preparation of government remittances, including:
    • GST/HST/PST filings
    • payroll source deductions

• Fixed Asset & Inventory Tracking
  • Maintain aircraft parts inventory and reconcile quantities with the Maintenance teams.
  • Track capital projects, including aircraft overhaul costs, hangar renovations and equipment acquisitions.
  • Record depreciation schedules, review asset lives and ensure accurate capitalization of eligible expenditures.
  • Assist with annual physical inventory counts for tools, parts and equipment.

• General Ledger & Month-End Support
  • Prepare detailed and accurate journal entries for accruals, amortization, prepaids, fuel inventory adjustments and intercompany transactions.
  • Review GL transactions regularly to identify anomalies or mispostings.
  • Reconcile multiple bank accounts, credit cards, petty cash and foreign currency accounts.
  • Maintain supporting schedules for key accounts such as:
    • Fuel and parts inventory
    • Maintenance costs accruals
    • Deferred revenue or deposits
    • Aircraft-specific expense tracking

• Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, internal controls and finance procedures.
  • Identify gaps in processes and recommend system or workflow improvements.
  • Safeguard confidentiality of sensitive financial and operational data.
  • Assist in creating standardized documentation for recurring accounting tasks.
  • Support automation initiatives to improve efficiency and data accuracy.
  • Participate in process documentation and workflow optimization.

• Ability to perform full-cycle AP/AR, reconciliations and journal entries to support staff absences and vacations.
• Other tasks as assigned by Management.
