About the Department/Region

Context: The Eastern Region maintains and supports approximately 3,500 NL Housing rental properties on the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas through offices in St. John's (Avalon) and Marystown. The region provides a wide range of services, including receiving and processing rental applications; administering rental accounts and lease compliance provisions; providing various client services and tenant relations including eviction prevention, and monitoring, facilitating and administering property maintenance. A variety of programs designed to support low to moderate income households and homeowners are also delivered. Regional staff members are involved in the delivery of the Provincial Home Repair, Home Modification, Home Energy Savings, Partner Managed Housing, and Rent Supplement Programs.

Salary Scale: $43,388 to $46,820 per annum (CG-19, $20.86 to $22.51 per hour), 40-hour work week

Duties: The incumbent performs cleaning and maintenance tasks including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors; disinfecting washrooms and surfaces; vacuuming, waxing floors, and dusting furniture; collecting garbage; replenishing washroom supplies. Responsibilities include ground maintenance like picking up litter, mowing, trimming hedges; ensuring building security and safety; clearing snow and ice; seasonal maintenance like painting and winterizing plumbing. They maintain and check equipment, handle emergency repairs, manage cleaning supply inventory, and clean carpets and windows. Work involves manual, sometimes physically demanding tasks inside and outside, often in adverse weather conditions, including minor plumbing, furniture relocation, and other duties as needed.

Screening Criteria

Completion of high school diploma (equivalencies may be considered)

Experience in custodial work

Experience in ground maintenance (asset)

Experience in building trades at the semi-skilled level (asset)

Assessment Criteria

1. Knowledge of the building trades at the semi-skilled level (asset)

2. Knowledge of grounds maintenance and the tools and equipment used in the performance of such work

3. Knowledge of custodial practices, including care and use of related equipment

4. Knowledge of safe work practices, including the use and storage of chemicals and solvents

5. Ability to effectively exchange information

6. Ability to work independently

7. Ability to manage time and tasks

Conditions of Employment

Conditions of Offer:

1. Proof of a valid class 5 driver's license

2. An acceptable driver's abstract

Conditions of Acceptance:

1. Willing to accept requirement for access to private transportation for business purposes

2. Acknowledgement of requirement for heavy lifting (up to possibly greater than 25 lb)

3. Acknowledgement of prolonged periods of standing/walking
