Job Overview:

Responsible for maintaining proper functioning of biomedical equipment.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for preventative maintenance of all medical equipment and point of care devices by carrying out scheduled maintenance as recommended by each manufacturer to ensure optimal performance, safe operation, and minimal downtime and maximize useful life.
• Performs inspection, repair, maintenance, calibration, quality assurance testing and installation of complex medical equipment and systems throughout various departments as authorized/assigned.
• Minimize the impact of equipment related risk to patients and staff by ensuring all equipment adheres to relevant safety standards (i.e. Canadian Standards Association), and follow-up on equipment recalls and hazard alerts (this includes participation on various risk committees - Patient Lifts, Clinical Products Evaluation).
• Actively investigates hazards and alerts associated with biomedical devices
• Works closely with Information Technology in evaluation and commissioning of integrated point of care devices and systems
• Maintains accurate records of maintenance and repair activities in a computerized maintenance systems
• To assist in providing access for inpatients to call-bells, door openers and telephones using only off the shelf standardized hospital equipment.
• Responsible for cross-training and knowledge transfer within the BES team to ensure optimal departmental efficiency and hospital coverage.
• Participate in the process of equipment planning and pre-purchase equipment evaluation by assessing safety, feasibility, cost, long range device planning and new technologies.
• Ensure equipment is safe and suitable for patient's needs by modifying existing equipment.
• Maintain a high level of technical expertise by attending relevant training courses, in-services and conferences.
• Intermediate level of proficiency with all Microsoft Office Applications
• Understands basic Internet and client/server architectures
• Maintains knowledge and application of various computer programs and technology related to point of care medical devices impacting the organization.
• Assists in the identification of practices necessary to enhance the biomedical engineering practice and collaborates with the manager to optimize resource utilization and enhance productivity
• Orders and maintains an accurate inventory of spare parts
• Arranges and coordinates external service provider support as required
• Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors including:
  • Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
  • Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
  • Taking corrective action, where possible
  • Attendance at safety meetings/training/updates in accordance with the Centre's standards
• Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the Centre's core values and helps patients get their life back
• Evidence of good performance history and attendance record

Additional Requirements by Specialty Area:

Augmentative & Alternate Communication Clinic (AAC)

• AAC - Perform timely repair and maintenance of equipment within the AAC clinic inventory as well as for clients of the clinic. This also includes maintenance and repair of equipment in client's residences.
• Construct, adapt, mount and bill appropriately electrical/electronic and mechanical devices and computer systems for AAC clients.
• Customization and adaptation of existing equipment to meet client needs.
• Design and construction of electromechanical devices that meet ADP requirements for AAC and are not commercially available to meet client needs.
• Develop an excellent working knowledge of the operation and application of all existing and newly emerging assistive devices/software prescribed by AAC Clinics.
• Provide technical input to team assessment of AAC clients and to assist in the development of equipment prescriptions and training protocols for clients and caregivers.
• Develop policies and procedures related to technical support of the AAC clinic.

Respiratory Therapy/LTV/Home Ventilation

• Proficiency at maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing medical equipment for Respiratory Therapy, CAVC, and Home Vent programs.
• Setup or modify equipment systems as required.
• Participate in various committees and task forces.
• Participate with the Purchasing Department in the research, purchase, and in-service of new medical equipment.
• Generate and maintain a work history of all equipment on a database.
• Attend relevant in-services, training courses, and conferences

Respiratory Diagnostic and Evaluation Services

• Proficiency at operating and repairing the Sleep, Pulmonary Function and exercise systems.
• Provide biomedical support for the protocol development and operation of research projects initiated by our Medical Director and research staff.
• Generate and modify databases for departmental quality assurance and operation to meet required standards. Also tabulate the data for presentation at departmental meetings.
• Participate in the process of equipment planning and pre-purchase equipment evaluation by assessing safety, feasibility and cost.
• Organize and attend in-service on new equipment and software.

Key Qualifications:

• Biomedical Technology Diploma or equivalent education
• Masters in Biomedical Engineering preferred
• 2-3 years related experience
• Specialized training in servicing various equipment: ventilators, sleep diagnostic, exercise, and ultrasound technology, and patient lifts
• Demonstrated understanding of and ability to deliver excellent customer service
• Strong technical troubleshooting skills
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a dynamic team and with healthcare professionals at all levels
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
• Evidence of satisfactory attendance and punctuality
• Intermediate level computer skills
