The Tŝilhqot’in National Government is based in Williams Lake, British Columbia serving six communities, including ʔEsdilagh, Tl'etinqox, Tl'esqox, Tŝideldel, Xeni Gwet'in, and Yuneŝit'in. The Tŝilhqot’in National Government’s mission is to support and empower Tŝilhqot’in peoples to exercise their rights to self-determination within their traditional territories in ways which reflect Tŝilhqot’in philosophy, values, experience and culture.

The Wildlife Technician will be complete field work within the Chilcotin, West of the Fraser River which is a diverse area of the province ranging from sagebrush canyons along the Fraser River to grasslands and from the forested plateau to the mountain alpines with various wetlands and salmon bearing rivers. This area of the province is home to a significant number of species in the province and includes all major predators and furbearers, ungulates including caribou, California bighorn sheep and moose, most gamebird species and a host of non-game species potentially even including a seabird species (marbled murrelet). The Chilcotin is a dream area for those interested in work focused on wildlife including field components for the Tsilhqot’in National Government.

The crew member will work as part of the larger Wildlife Section within TNG. The crew will work with other TNG employees, community representatives, and other individuals throughout the summer based on the project and location. Hours will shift according to the weekly survey plans and can include overtime and/or weekend work, dawn surveys, evening/night surveys and surveys/other work beyond the regular hours from 8:30am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday.

The crew member must be able and willing to work in remote areas within bear country in various weather conditions and seasons, carry up to 50lbs of equipment, and overnight in remote areas including tent settings (with use of electric fences). This may include being dropped off in an area for up to a week via helicopter while most areas will be ground accessible.

Key Responsibilities

• Ground based surveys: mule deer, mountain goat, and bighorn sheep lamb recruitment.


• Assist with targeted wildlife drone surveys.


• Autonomous recording unit (ARU), bat detector and trail camera deployment, maintenance and data uploading.


• Species at risk or concern surveys (e.g. nightjars and goshawks), non-game surveys (e.g. feral pig and common loon), and sharp-tailed grouse lek surveys.


• Mortality investigations on collared ungulate and predator species.


• Bat, kestrel and owl box deployment, maintenance and monitoring.


• Grizzly bear hair collection for a DNA program (includes a fall project).


• Aerial surveys focused on ungulate species.


• Wildlife capturing for collaring (non-currently planned for the summer months).


• Assisting with other wildlife, problem wildlife, access management or habitat focused projects (e.g. invasive plant removals), as needed.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in school and must be taking full time courses in September 2026

Formal education is not a requirement. We are emphasizing experience living and working within bear country combined with personal motivation and discipline. Individuals who are organized, adaptable, hardworking, and community orientated take precedence.

The ideal candidate will have or be actively obtaining the following:

• Post-secondary degree or diploma focused on wildlife, habitat, or general environmental focused biology


• Greater than three years of outdoor experience or two years if wildlife focused experience.


• Classification or ability to become a P.Ag, T.Ag, FIT, RPBio, BIT, RBTech, ABT, or ABT in Training


• Existing wildlife identification skills focused ungulates, large to medium sized predators, furbearers and gamebird species. Birds, reptiles, amphibians, and some invertebrate species identification skills are desired

Experience with outdoor equipment including:

• Vehicles (must have a driver’s licence), ATV, and UTV


• Tablet for recording survey data


• InReach or Spot devices and satellite phones


• Drone experience (Basic Pilots Licence)


• Computer use including Microsoft and ability to learn other programs


• Standard First Aid and experience within bear country including use of bear spray

Working Conditions

• Travel will be required


• Ability to work independently or as part of a team


• Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and additional hardware


• Lifting or moving up to 50lbs may be required
