Job Purpose

Represents the Law Society in various regulatory proceedings, appearing before the Law Society Tribunal and in the courts while ensuring strict confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Requires an LLB or JD, plus a class L1 license with the Law Society of Ontario.
• Requires a minimum of Articling or post-call litigation experience.
• Experience gained in a professional regulation context would be advantageous.
• Professional knowledge:
• The Law Society’s mandate, services, legislation, and policies.
• Investigation and prosecutorial practices.
• Rules of evidence and procedure and the law concerning privilege and documentary disclosure.
• Legal research and litigation.
• Technical skills:
• The application of technology, preferably in a legal and/or regulatory environment.
• Negotiation skills with tact and diplomacy, and demonstrated advocacy skills.
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Project coordination, prioritization, and time management skills.
• Business acumen and data‑driven decision‑making.
• Interpersonal, oral, and written communication, and presentation skills for individual and group settings.
• Organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
• Relationship Management.
• Ability to manage a high volume of case load in a dynamic and fast‑paced environment.

Key Accountabilities

Case Management & Regulatory Proceedings

• Prepares for hearings (e.g., develops a case strategy, assesses evidence against required standards of proof, prepares witnesses, drafts documents (including authorization memos, notices of application, agreed statements of fact, requests to admit, affidavits and other hearing materials including facta), negotiates narrow issues of fact and law, attends prehearings, researches law, etc.).
• Represents the Law Society in hearings, appeals and judicial reviews.
• Coordinates own caseload to ensure compliance with priorities, performance metrics, timelines, and strategic priorities.
• Communicates with staff and complainants regarding the process and disposition of cases.
• Provides advice to investigators on case‑specific matters.

Policy Development

• Initiates, researches, and recommends policy changes to improve the regulatory process.
• Participates on Bencher committees and working groups.

Team Membership

• Promotes the sharing and transfer of knowledge, applicable standards, and information amongst members of division.
• Contributes to and participates in the development of standardized practices, guidelines, and procedures for the prosecution of discipline files.
• Works with and shares expertise with other regulatory bodies and legal organizations.
