Detailed Job Description The Opportunity
The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is seeking experienced police leaders interested in joining our organization as a Staff Sergeant.
The Staff Sergeant is a senior operational leadership role responsible for the supervision, guidance, and development of frontline supervisors and members while ensuring the effective delivery of policing services aligned with GPPS strategic priorities. Staff Sergeants provide operational oversight, investigative leadership, resource management, and organizational direction in support of public safety, member wellness, and community trust.
The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, sound judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to lead complex investigations, manage high-risk incidents, develop staff, and foster meaningful community partnerships while advancing the mission, vision, and values of the Grande Prairie Police Service.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to Sergeants, frontline members, and civilian staff.
- Establish operational priorities and ensure alignment with GPPS strategic objectives.
- Oversee patrol and investigative operations while ensuring professional, effective, and lawful service delivery.
- Monitor and manage operational performance, workload distribution, and resource deployment.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities to supervisors and members.
- Conduct performance management activities, including recognition, corrective action, and development planning.
- Liaise with Crown Counsel and external partners to support successful investigative and judicial outcomes.
- Provide command and oversight during critical incidents and high-risk operations.
- Conduct operational risk assessments and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with legislation, policy, organizational standards, and rules of evidence.
- Identify emerging trends, risks, and community concerns and develop strategies to address them.
- Foster collaborative relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and key stakeholders.
- Support community-based policing initiatives and problem-solving approaches to crime and social disorder.
- Participate in organizational planning and contribute to the development of operational and strategic initiatives.
- Promote member wellness, workplace respect, diversity, and inclusion.
- Support organizational accountability through incident review, debriefing, quality assurance, and continuous improvement processes.

Required Qualifications
- Current police officer in good standing with a Canadian police service.
- Minimum ten (10) years of policing experience.
- Minimum three (3) years confirmed in the rank of Sergeant or equivalent supervisory rank.
- Demonstrated experience supervising personnel and leading operational policing activities.
- Extensive knowledge of criminal law, investigative processes, evidence handling, and major case management principles.
- Demonstrated experience managing high-risk incidents and complex investigations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think strategically and make sound decisions in dynamic environments.
- Eligible for appointment as a police officer in Alberta in accordance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Investigative experience involving major crimes, complex files, or specialized units.
- Formal incident command, emergency management, or critical incident leadership training.
- Experience leading multiple teams, sections, or operational units.
- Advanced leadership, management, or supervisory training.
- Experience developing community partnerships and stakeholder relationships.
- Experience mentoring and developing supervisors.
- Post-secondary education in policing, leadership, public administration, justice studies, or a related field.
Schedule
This position may require a variety of work schedules, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, statutory holidays, and extended operational deployments as required.
