About the Role:

This position supports the General Manager in the day-to-day operation of the Health, Fitness and Aquatic (HFA) centre and serves as the second-in-command for centre operations. The Assistant Manager provides direct leadership to the YMCA Experience Supervisor, Cleaning Coordinator, and oversees the effective delivery of membership services, facility cleanliness, the Duty Manager program, health and safety practices, and member experience standards.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Staff Development    

• Provide direct leadership, coaching, and support to YMCA Experience Supervisor, Cleaning Coordinator, and other assigned team members. 


• Support recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance management processes for YMCA Experience and Cleaning staff. 


• Foster a positive, inclusive, and member-focused culture aligned with YMCA values and The Y Way. 

Daily Operations and Service Excellence 

• Oversee daily centre operations and ensure consistent execution of YMCA policies, procedures, and service standards. 


• Lead service recovery efforts and resolve escalated member concerns using sound judgement and YMCA values. 


• Oversee daily cleaning operations and support the Cleaning Coordinator with hiring, consistent onboarding, adherence to approved cleaning procedures, equipment maintenance expectations, supply ordering guidelines, approved suppliers, and maintaining centre spaces, towels, member amenities, and cleanliness standards. 

YMCA Experience and Membership Operations 

• Provide leadership for membership services, member engagement, and YMCA Experience operations. 


• Develop strong working knowledge of membership and registration systems, policies, and processes to coach supervisors and resolve centre-level operational questions. 


• Support membership acquisition, retention, and engagement initiatives within the centre. 

Duty Manager Program Oversight 

• Provide centre-level leadership and accountability for the Duty Manager program. 

Health, Safety and Child Protection 

• Support implementation of YMCA health and safety, child protection, emergency response, and risk management policies and procedures. 


• Monitor compliance with safety standards and ensure corrective actions are taken when required. 

Operational Performance & Administration 

• Support achievement of membership, service, and operational performance targets. 


• Support the General Manager and direct reports with centre budget stewardship by monitoring operational expenses, staffing schedules, supplies, and other controllable costs, and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining service standards. 


• Participate in operational planning, leadership meetings, and organizational initiatives. 


• Support the General Manager with centre participation in the annual Strong Kids Strong Communities fundraising campaign, including staff engagement, centre-level initiatives, donor outreach, and follow-through on campaign activities. 

 Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in recreation, business, human services, customer service, or related field. 


• 3+ years of experience in customer service, centre operations, membership, recreation, or related service environment, including leadership experience. 


• Experience supervising staff, supporting operational schedules, resolving member concerns, and implementing service standards. 


• Experience working using Microsoft Office Applications and other forms of technology.    


• Excellent organizational and time management skills. 


• Strong knowledge of membership operations, frontline service delivery, facility cleaning standards, safety practices, and emergency response procedures.  


• Works well with team in a customer service capacity.      


• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.      


• Flexible work schedule – including early mornings, evenings, weekends and Stat holidays.    


• Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and CPR-C.


• Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
