Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Section Manager, Parks Operations to join the Infrastructure, Transportation and Parks team. The opportunity is a temporary full-time role for approximately one (1) year but may be subject to extension.

Responsibilities

You will report to the Manager, Parks and Natural Spaces in this position and will lead unionized staff responsible for the operation and maintenance of city parks and public open spaces including sports fields, playgrounds, trails, tennis courts, park buildings, irrigation systems, lighting systems, waterplay areas, streetscape features and the operations and administration of the City’s Cemetery.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading and managing a team of unionized parks operations staff, including task assignment, specifying deliverables, developing timelines and quality expectations, coaching, mentoring, providing opportunities for growth, and delivering feedback and corrective action as necessary;
• Overseeing the operation, maintenance and service delivery of parks and open space infrastructure to optimise social, environmental and economic outcomes for the community;
• Providing guidance to staff preparing regular progress reports to the Manager, Parks and Natural Spaces and presenting project updates and recommendations to senior leadership staff and Council;
• Budget development and management, including responsibility for an annual operating budget of approximately $4M, monitoring expenditures, ensuring compliance with budget constraints and recommending cost-saving strategies;
• Working collaboratively with the Parks Planning and Design, and Urban Forestry and Watershed teams, along with various other external and internal colleagues and partners in the delivery of capital programs and projects.
• Responding to Council and public inquiries on matters related to park operations

Requirements

You will have considerable related public works/parks operations municipal experience in a supervisory and administrative capacity supplemented by a degree or diploma, or red seal trade in a related field such as landscape architecture, parks management, natural resource management or similar. Your demonstrated success in progressive leadership positions is essential, along with experience in project management, an understanding of the principles of asset management, and a strong knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices. Superior communication and interpersonal skills, a high work ethic and the demonstrated ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with the public, stakeholders and City Council will ensure your success in this role.

Compensation

We offer an attractive remuneration and benefits package for this exempt position, including a compressed work schedule. The salary range is $135,540 to $158,232 annually (2026 rates).
