This role will be a point of contact for students who are seeking well-being supports, including internal mental health and student services, and community resources. This position combines proactive well-being promotion and mental health literacy work, with responsive triage, navigation, crisis response, and service coordination functions.
Working in a stepped-care service delivery framework, within a trauma-informed, inclusive, and restorative model, the Well-being Navigator provides intake, triage and assessment, supports early intervention, crisis response, connects students to appropriate internal and external services, and coordinates care across campus and community systems. The incumbent engages in a respectful, trauma and equity-informed inquiry regarding student need(s) to identify the most appropriate service(s) and referral points, while maintaining relationships with internal and external collaborators.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as the first point of contact for students experiencing mental health challenges; is responsible for assessing and de-escalating stressful/crisis situations, supporting initial assessment of risk where appropriate, and making appropriate service connections to counseling or other service providers
- Books appointments, or issues Navigate360 alerts, with relevant services area in alignment with student need, ensuring a match between expertise/experience and student need.
- Reviews student record (i.e. SIS, Navgiate360, technology platforms) to ensure a fulsome picture of the student experience and coordinates service as appropriate
- Provides warm referral services for students to other service areas and provides reasonable follow up to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of any referrals outside of student success
- Creates and maintains resources to support student well-being such as digital resources available on our SharePoint, peer/group resources, community support available through organizations offering specialized care, internal mental health support, etc.
- Maintains campus well-being resources for dissemination to faculty and staff
- Provides Georgian community consultation and coaching support regarding well-being services. Guide community members such as staff & faculty on available services, provides guidance on navigating low-level situations and referrals to services
- In alignment with the Manager, Well-being and Care, to identify and determine next steps with external community organizations to facilitate referrals for care, and with internal GC departments to aid in stronger campus connections
- Experience in the delivery of well-being programming, events and initiatives for students/clients.
- Supports initial risk assessments for referral to services. Provide traumatic event response on campus as appropriate in consultation with Manager.
- Supports health promotion and well-being education through tabling events and days of acknowledgement, coordination of social media accounts, classroom presentations, and the promotion of community resources
- Curate and facilitate MHWB events for students, staff and faculty ensuring a trauma-informed approach that promotes gentle curiosity and empathy and strives not to re-harm individuals through the recognition of the widespread impact of trauma on individuals and communities
- Supports peer to peer well-being connections as appropriate.
- Maintains accurate case records of all student interactions in Navigate360 to track the student journey; conducts data analysis and creates service reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Successfully completed a 4-year degree or equivalent in the field of social work, counselling psychology
- Must be registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
- A minimum of 2 years experience in mental health service provision, including mental health services intake and needs assessment with demonstrated experience in risk assessment, crisis intervention, and case coordination.
- Experience working in postsecondary, community mental health, or healthcare settings preferred.
- A commitment to the principles of empowerment, integration and inclusion, and demonstrated skills and ability in the following are required:
- Experience providing service to diverse populations, including international individuals, individuals with disabilities and/or mental health conditions
- Responding to client needs in a sensitive and positive manner
- Maintaining a high degree of confidentiality
- Lived experience as a member of an equity-owed group, providing trauma-informed, anti-oppressive care is a strong asset to this role
