About Us

The Faculty of Health Sciences is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centres. The Faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).

The Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing educates nurses who are reflective practitioners and provides recognized leadership in nursing research, theory, practice, and policy advancements. Our research programs seek to develop knowledge capable of enhancing health equity by transforming practice, services, education and policies that affect health and well-being across the lifespan. Research programs reflect 5 overlapping areas of strength: Women's Health; Violence, Gender and Health; Digital Health; Mental Health; and Global and Indigenous Health.

As the Women's Health Research Chair in Rural Health, Dr. Marilyn Ford-Gilboe leads a large, externally funded research program in the area of violence against women, women's health, inequity and rurality. Her research includes a focus on developing and testing the effectiveness of online and F2F interventions in improving the health, safety and well-being of women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), and studying the integration of these innovations into complex systems. This research is part of a long-standing collaboration with colleagues at the University of British Columbia and University of New Brunswick.

Responsibilities

The Research Associate will directly support Dr. Ford-Gilboe's program of research. The Research Associate will apply their expertise and knowledge to ongoing research activities, under the direction of the Principal Investigator and study leads, with primary responsibilities related to implementation research for both the iHEAL program and the iHEAL app. The Research Associate will assist with coordination and communication within this larger team of collaborators, staff, trainees at Western and other universities, and with partners in health care organizations, while also supporting specific research activities in Ontario. Specific areas of responsibility include: Planning, Design and Conduct of the Research; Data Management and Analysis; Project Management, Coordination and Team Communication; Knowledge Mobilization; and Research Administration and Reporting.

Qualifications

Education:

• Master's degree in a Health or Social Science discipline

Experience:

• 3 years' experience conducting research in one or more of the following area(s): violence against women/gender-based violence, women's health, health equity, development/testing/implementation/scale up of health/health interventions, health services research, or closely related areas Experience and/or training related to equity/social justice and working with diverse populations, including Indigenous Peoples, community-based research Experience writing reports, proposals, and academic papers
• Experience with various research methodologies, data collection techniques, and ethical considerations
• Experience in survey design and website management
• Previous experience developing and enacting Knowledge Mobilization strategies
• Experience leading and/or contributing to research and peer-reviewed publications in areas that are relevant to this research is preferred
• Experience working in inter-disciplinary teams of researchers and non-academic partners preferred
• Previous research experience and/or training in implementation science is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrated knowledge of violence against women and of particular strengths and common issues experienced by marginalized populations
• Demonstrated knowledge of research principles and methods (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods approaches)
• Knowledge of publication processes with demonstrated expertise contributing to peer-review publications
• Demonstrated skill and ability in quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis
• Ability to interpret and identify key results from research and to succinctly summarize research findings
• Proficiency in using computer applications including word processing, data base management, analysis (e.g. SPSS, NVIVO), website maintenance (intermediate level), social media platforms.
• Organized and flexible; able to work in a fluid and evolving work environment with changing deadlines and priorities and meet deadlines
• Innovative thinking, sound judgement and ethical conduct, including ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and discretion
• Resourceful and with a strong sense of accountability and initiative; able to work independently with limited supervision
• Strong research project budgeting skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective, professional, mutually beneficial relationships with varied stakeholders (e.g. academics, students, service providers, policy makers)
