Safely Connected, The Eating Disorder Centre is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that provides support and education to youth and providers on the topic of eating disorders, body image issues, and disordered eating and exercise. We are an anti-ableist, anti-racist and anti-colonialist, fat- and body-positive, queer- and trans-positive, and pro-feminist organization. Our organization delivers training and resources to youth on post-secondary campuses to provide students with tools to understand and change the normalized behaviours that lead to and aggravate disordered eating and disordered exercising and create peer support spaces. We also delivers a variety of trainings to providers and care-givers on eating disorders, trauma-informed care, active listening, harm reduction, barriers to access, and the underrepresented experiences of marginalized communities in eating disorder care, and their necessary needs and accommodations. Our goal is to break down the barriers to conversation and validation of anyone's experiences to minimize the isolation of individuals who suffer from disordered eating on post-secondary campuses.

Job Description

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for managing external communication channels, and creating informative, educational, promotional and engaging content. 

Tasks & Responsibilities: 

1. Determine communications campaigns to raise awareness of Safely Connected Services;

2. Review style guides and brand voice outlines for all public relations, marketing, advertising, outreach, and written content;

3. Create and update graphic, promotional and inclusive educational content to share on Safely Connected’s external communications;

4. Create or collaborate to develop artistic content on eating disorders;

5. Collect data on engagement with communications content;

6. Research Safely Connected’s current and potential audience to understand behaviours, trends and other factors that could affect engagement;

7. Connect and network with similarly minded organizations and individuals doing social media activism on eating disorders; and

8. Collaborate with partners of Safely Connected to create inclusive, intersectional content around eating disorders, centering the voices of Indigenous Peoples, Black and other racialized people, people with disabilities, and Two-Spirit and people from gender and sexually diverse communities.

Qualifications

1. No required education or past experience;
2. Basic understanding of current mental health initiatives and issues, specifically eating disorders; 
3. Ability to create graphic design content and promotional writing;
4. Past experience in communications or social media is an asset; and
5. Strong communication skills both in English and French an asset;
6. Knowledge and experience with Canva and Squarespace is an asset.

Additional Information

• Pay Rate: $17.20/ hour.
• Contract: 8 weeks: June 2nd, 2025 to July 28th, 2025.
• Hours : 35 hours a week.
• Deadline to apply : May 5th, 2025.

Requirements:

• Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
• Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
• Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
