POSITION OVERVIEW  

Birds Canada is seeking the support of an enthusiastic,  knowledgeable and personable candidate for the role of  New Brunswick  Coastal Bird Stewardship Technician.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct fieldwork and public outreach focused on recovering  two  threatened species,   Piping Plovers and  Bank Swallows. Specific duties include but are not limited  to conducting nesting surveys for  Piping Plover and Bank Swallow in  coastal habitats; con ducting roost surveys for Bank Swallows; communicating with landowners, local governments, and the public about  coastal ecosystems ;  public event coordination;  and entering survey data.  

The  Coastal Bird   Stewardship Technician will  be   responsible for their own housing ,  located in Southeast NB . Field work will involve  extensive travel  throughout  eastern NB from the  Miramichi River to Cape  Jourimain ,   some hiking on  remote beaches ,  and  long days outdoors , as well as some evening/weekend work commitments . The successful candidate should be comfortable  communicating with members of the public in English and French .  

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS  

This   full-time ,   fixed term (12-week )  role   will start on  11  May   and end on  31 July 2026 .   The   Coastal Bird   Stewardship Technician   reports to the   Associate Director   of   Atlantic Programs, and the Atlantic   Aerial   Insectivore Conservation   Biologist .   This position pays $18.48/ hr for an   approximately 40-hr   work week, plus statutory and discretionary benefits including Vacation and Personal Health Days which will be pro-rated based on the length of this contract.  Mileage reimbursement ($0.67/km) will be provided for use of a personal vehicle for travel to field sites . DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

The candidate will support Birds Canada’s science and conservation programs with a focus on endangered Piping Plover and threatened Bank Swallow on southeastern NB beaches.  Working with an experienced team who will provide mentorship and support for skill building, the candidate will  be responsible for :  

1. a) Working collaboratively and independently to conduct regular beach surveys to assess breeding Piping Plover, Bank Swallow, other birds, threats, and stewardship outcomes; 
   


2. b ) Connecting with beachgoers and coastal landowners to build understanding and awareness of coastal birdlife and foster beach stewardship;
   


3. d) Assist ing with bilingual outreach activities (in person and through digital platforms) to support coastal nature education and appreciation through community events and targeting youth and seniors; 
   


4. e) Manag ing and enter ing data using MS Excel and web-based database and  assist ing with data analysis and summaries.  

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND OTHER ESSENTIALS :  

• Fluency in English and French  

• In - progress or completed degree or diploma in biology, ecology or related field, or equivalent experience  

• Valid driver’s license  

• Valid First Aid certification (obtained before contract start date) 

• For home-based office portions of the role, you must have access to a personal computer and reliable internet  

• You must be legally entitled to work in Canada (if applicable, successful applicants must provide a copy of their Work Permit and temporary SIN prior to  commencing work) 

• Preference  will be given to those who meet  Canada Summer   Jobs or  NB SEED eligibility criteria  

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS  

• Strong communication and organizational skills, and enthusiasm for bird conservation  

• Experience working on, and interest in, environmental stewardship or public outreach projects  

• Experience working outdoors in remote environments , ideally on environmental projects  

• The ability to work independently with little supervision , and with a team  

• E xperience conducting bird or wildlife surveys and/or collecting,  managing and analyzing data  

• Familiarity with ecology and conservation of  coastal birds  

• Some experience coordinating  people ( e.g., volunteers , event participants)is considered a strong asset   

• Experience with outreach  via social media  platforms  is an asset  

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS  

The salary for this role is $18. 48per hour for a  40-hour work week, plus statutory and discretionary benefits including pro-rated Vacation and Personal Health Days. This position  also includes a meal reimbursement for overnight work, and branded clothing  for public-facing events and fieldwork.
