Office of Health Ethics

The Office of Health Ethics supports ethical reflection and decision-making across LHSC, helping individuals and teams thoughtfully navigate complex issues affecting patient care and the organization.

Job Summary

The Clinical and Organizational Ethicist provides consultation, education, and practical resources that promote ethical decision-making aligned with LHSC's mission, purpose, and values. Working with patients, families, staff, physicians, leaders, researchers, and community partners, the Ethicist creates a respectful and balanced process for examining ethical concerns rather than advocating for any one stakeholder.

Through clinical consultation, education, research and partnership, this role strengthens ethical decision-making across the organization, contributes to improvements in patient care, and helps develop sustainable ethics resources from the bedside to the boardroom.

What You Will Do

• Respond to requests for clinical and organizational ethics consultation from patients, families, frontline staff, physicians, and hospital leadership
• Help stakeholders identify, articulate and work through complex ethical issues
• Facilitate thoughtful discussion where perspectives, interests or responsibilities may differ
• Identify and escalate organizational risks emerging through ethics consultations
• Provide ethical guidance to support policy, guideline and protocol development
• Develop and deliver education that builds ethical awareness, knowledge and decision-making skills
• Support and supervise students, residents, fellows or other ethics learners
• Conduct and contribute to research, evaluation, and quality improvement activities related to health ethics
• Support the development and dissemination of innovative ethics practices and resources
• Collaborate with clinical and corporate departments, committees and external partners on ethics-related initiatives
• Participate in ethics networks, communities of practice, and professional associations
• Provide ethics support to organizational committees
• Provide ethics guidance to external stakeholders (e.g. long-term care homes)
• Document clinical ethics case consultations in compliance with legal requirements, ethical policy statements, or departmental guidelines

Temporary Full-Time

Rate of Pay: $61.24 per hour - $76.54 per hour

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Duration : Up to May 31, 2027

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a master's degree in Ethics, Bioethics, Health Ethics or a related field
• Completion of a recognized clinical ethics fellowship or residency, preferred
• Member of Canadian Association of Practicing Healthcare Ethicists or Healthcare Ethics Consultant (HEC-c) is considered an asset
• Experience providing ethics consultation, coaching or guidance in a healthcare, academic or similarly complex environment
• Demonstrated ability to assess and clearly articulate complex ethical considerations
• Strong moral reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and respectfully
• Strong facilitation, mediation, and conflict-resolution skills
• Demonstrated ability to engage individuals with differing perspectives while supporting fair, and consistently applied processes
• Ability to build collaborative relationships with patients, families, staff, physicians, leaders, researchers and external partners
• Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment when responding to sensitive or time-sensitive matters
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and remaining current with health ethics literature and emerging practice
• Experience conducting or contributing to research, quality improvement or program evaluation
• Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, privacy, and the respectful handling of sensitive information
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient- and family-centred care
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose and values
• Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
