Assistant Professor or Associate Professor Teaching

The Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary invites applications for two (2) full-time academic Teaching positions who can support the University of Calgary's Strategic Plan:

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching (tenure-track), or Associate Professor, Teaching (with tenure). The anticipated start date is January 2027 or a mutually agreed upon date.

This position can be based at the Faculty's Calgary or Edmonton campus.

The Opportunity

The position entails 80% teaching and 20% service. The service component includes service at the faculty, university and professional levels. The teaching component will include teaching BSW, MSW, and/or graduate certificate courses, with leadership and administrative engagement. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level in diverse delivery contexts and unique delivery models at undergraduate and graduate levels is required. Preference will be for practice experience and a strong background in more than one of the following areas:

• Leadership and organizational level practices
• Field Education
• Clinical Practice with Diverse Populations
• Africentric Worldview practices
• Indigenous Worldview practices
• Artificial Intelligence and its Impact in Social Work Education
• Mental health
• Trauma
• Child, family, group practices
• Simulation and Social Work Education

Scholarship-related duties will normally include the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content of social work.

Candidate Requirements

A doctoral degree in social work or a related field, or demonstration of near-term completion of the degree, is required, as well as a Master's degree in social work (clinical practice preferred) and/or Bachelor of Social Work degree, and eligibility to register with the Alberta College of Social Worker. Specifically, requirements are as follows:

• The candidate holds a PhD in social work. In exceptional circumstances, a DSW, or Ed.D., or PhD or doctorate in an interdisciplinary-related field may be considered. A highly experienced first-time faculty member with a scheduled PhD date of defense may be considered.
• Applicants will hold either a BSW or MSW and be eligible to register with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
• Minimum of five years of full-time social work practice.
• Social work teaching success must be demonstrated.
• Demonstrated leadership in social work organizations is required.
• Demonstrated knowledge and practice in the areas of equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility and social justice is required.
• Strong communication, collaboration, organizational and computer skills are required.
• A commitment to our Faculty's Strategic Plan is required.
• A demonstrated commitment to supporting and promoting Indigenous models of practice and ways of knowing is required.
• Experience as a field instructor (supervising practicum students) is required. Demonstrated field education experience, coordination and support for field education delivery (e.g., supporting sessionals who are field liaisons and teaching integrated seminars) is an asset.
• The successful candidate must reside full-time in Alberta in the region of one of our campus locations.

Appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) requires evidence or promise of successful teaching effectiveness in a post-secondary setting. The duties of an Assistant Professor (Teaching) will also include engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogical approaches and content in the discipline. Some experience of previous service roles is required.

Appointments at the rank of Associate Professor (Teaching) requires evidence of substantial experience in and effectiveness of undergraduate and graduate teaching in a post-secondary setting, as well as innovation in teaching methods showing that the individual can initiate and participate in a wide variety of teaching activities. The duties of an Associate Professor (Teaching) will include staying up to date with pedagogical approaches and content in the discipline. Substantial experience of previous services roles is required.
