Are we right for you...
We’re passionate about people and creating sustainable, safe and affordable public transit solutions to residents across BC. We are an organization that has a people-first approach and considers people first in every business decision that we make. We are part of the solution and what we do matters; from fighting climate change with battery electric buses, to affordability through cost effective transportation, to connecting remote communities, we bring the heart, soul and innovation to public transportation.
It’s an exciting time to be in the public transportation sector and we’re looking for a creative and passionate leader to join our team. Not only would you be joining an engaged organization, but you’d also get to enjoy flexible work arrangements, extended benefits and a pension plan as just a few of the benefits BC Transit employees are eligible for. Keep reading to find out if this role is meant for you!
What you'll be doing...
The Abilities Management Case Manager plays an important role in BC Transit’s People and Culture team by supporting employees and leaders through occupational and non-occupational injury and illness claims. In this role, you will provide thoughtful, timely and confidential case management support that helps employees safely remain at work or return to sustainable work as soon as medically appropriate.
You will work closely with employees, leaders, People and Culture partners, Payroll, union representatives, health care providers, WorkSafeBC and insurers to remove barriers, support clear communication and promote early, safe and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.
Your work will include a mix of WorkSafeBC claims, sick leave and short-term illness or injury cases, long-term disability coordination, return-to-work planning and medical accommodation support across unionized and exempt employee groups.
This is a hands-on case management role that requires strong judgment, careful documentation and the ability to manage a high-volume, varied caseload while knowing when to seek guidance or escalate complex matters.
In this position, you will get the opportunity to:
- Adjudicate and manage a high volume case load of disability case management activities for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses, with a focus on safe, timely and sustainable return to work.
- Maintain regular, supportive communication with employees while collaborating with care providers, leaders and union representatives to understand progress, needs and barriers.
- Assess fitness for work using bona fide medical and functional information, to identify opportunities for early intervention, modified duties or accommodation support.
- Interpret medical and functional information within the scope of the role and translate restrictions, limitations and abilities into clear, practical workplace recommendations for leaders and employees.
- Develop individualized return-to-work plans that reflect an employee’s functional abilities, medical restrictions and individual circumstances.
- Document case activity, decisions and next steps in the electronic case management system in a timely, accurate and confidential manner.
- Provide expert recommendations, coaching and education on disability management best practices, roles and responsibilities, collective agreement provisions, short-term illness and injury plans, long-term disability and accommodation processes.
- Partner with People and Culture Advisors and leaders on medical accommodations by confirming medical restrictions and limitations that support accommodation planning.
- Support respectful, solutions-focused conversations when employee needs, medical information, union perspectives and operational requirements need to be aligned.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to resolve complex return-to-work, retraining, alternate employment and accommodation matters.
This is a hybrid work opportunity with the expectation that the successful candidate will reside in the Greater Victoria and work on-site at least two days per week. There may also be times when attending onsite meetings or connecting with operational teams in person is required to support effective case management and return-to-work planning.
For additional information about this position please review the Job Description .
What you might love about this role...
- You enjoy working through complex situations and finding practical, people-focused solutions that support employees while also meeting operational needs.
- You like variety in your work and are energized by cases that require curiosity, critical thinking, sound judgment and comfort navigating ambiguity.
- You find purpose in helping employees stay connected to work or return to work safely, while contributing to attendance, productivity and workforce sustainability.
- You are motivated by collaborative work and enjoy partnering with employees, leaders, unions, health care providers and other stakeholders to support meaningful outcomes.
- You enjoy converting complex, technical information into clear, practical language that leaders can understand and implement in the workplace.
- You appreciate a role where success is built through thoughtful recommendations, strong follow-through, sound judgment and the ability to influence positive outcomes without always being the final decision-maker.
What may not be the right fit...
- This work can involve balancing employee needs, operational realities, legal obligations and competing priorities, often while plans continue to evolve.
- Many situations are nuanced and require patience, adaptability and the ability to work through uncertainty with care and professionalism.
- You can expect to have sensitive conversations, support conflict resolution and help align different perspectives in a respectful and solutions-focused way.
- The role requires strong organization and attention to detail, as you will manage multiple complex cases, deadlines and documentation requirements at the same time.
The work includes regular documentation, follow-up and coordination, so candidates should be comfortable balancing people-focused conversations with administrative accuracy and confidentiality.
This role may not be for you if...
- You’re looking for a fully remote position or a role with limited need for onsite collaboration, in-person conversations or operational connection.
- You’re looking for highly predictable work with limited complexity, few competing priorities and minimal need for problem-solving or decision-making.
- You are uncomfortable balancing compassion and employee support with operational requirements, organizational responsibilities and legal obligations.
- You find it difficult to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing circumstances or maintain resilience when plans shift or challenges arise.
What you'll bring to the table...
We value lifelong learners and have found that a mix of any of the following credentials have set people up for success in this role in the past:
To be successful, you’ll bring both technical disability management knowledge and the ability to communicate complex information in a clear, practical and respectful way.
- A bachelor’s degree in Disability Management, Human Resources, Kinesiology, Health sciences or a related field, plus two years of recent related experience in disability case management; or a related post-secondary diploma/certificate plus four years of recent related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, demonstrated skill and experience may be considered.
- Experience applying disability management best practices, early intervention principles and return-to-work planning in a unionized environment.
- Knowledge of WorkSafeBC claims processing, policies, procedures and the Rehabilitation Services & Claims Manual is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of employment legislation, collective agreements, human rights obligations, privacy requirements and the roles of key stakeholders in the disability management process.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication and verbal communication skills, with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong ability to interpret complex medical information and translate it into clear, practical workplace recommendations that support accommodation, return to work planning, ensuring leaders can confidently implement solutions that balance employee recovery, operational requirements and legal obligations.
What we'll bring to the table...
- Comprehensive medical and dental benefits to support you and your family, regardless of what life throws at you
- Membership in BC’s Public Service Pension Plan (PSPP). Nationally recognized for its strong investment and governance practices, PSPP is a “defined benefit” plan
- Access to fitness and lifestyle centers to help you take care of your physical fitness and health
- Various programs that support employees such as an Employee Assistance Program and health and wellness initiatives and events aimed at fostering your mental health
- A complimentary employee bus pass (plus taxable dependent passes)
- A corporate learning and development program to help you in continuous career growth
- An employee recognition program where we all recognize each other's successes (not just your Leaders!)
- A social club that gives you access to events throughout Victoria
What next steps could look like...
- Interviews will be conducted in October 2026
- An assessment may be sent to shortlisted applicants in conjunction with their interview invitations
- An eligibility list for future full time regular and temporary full time vacancies may be established
- The position requires the completion of a Criminal Record Check or Vulnerable Sector Search.
- If you have a disability that requires an accommodation during any stage of our recruitment process, please let us know how we can assist you by contacting View email address on jobs.bctransit.com
- BC Transit is committed to providing access, equal opportunity and reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities. If the organization identifies this position as a reasonable accommodation for an existing employee, all candidates will be notified as soon as reasonably possible

In keeping with this belief, we do not discriminate on any basis. Should you require any accommo dation or have questions, please let us know.
