OPPORTUNITY PROFILE
FireSmart Coordinator - Temporary Full-Time ending April 15, 2027, with potential for a permanent position with an expanded role in emergency management after that date.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality is seeking an enthusiastic and organized individual to join our team as the FireSmart Coordinator. This position is critical for supporting wildfire preparedness prevention and mitigation efforts through public education, assessments, and mitigation work aimed at reducing community risk from wildfires. The FireSmart Coordinator is responsible for the facilitation of FireSmart related activities within the municipality. The position will ensure that the FireSmart activities are supported, developed, and implemented following provincial guidelines and the direction provided by the Fire Prevention department.

ABOUT SUN PEAKS MOUNTAIN RESORT MUNICIPALITY
Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality is a vibrant year-round, growing mountain tourism community boasting world class skiing, mountain biking, skating rink, hiking and golf and a core tourist village with some 850 hotel beds. Sun Peaks has a population of 1,500 year-round residents, and hosts on average 3,000 to 7,000 daily winter visitors and 1,000 to 3,000 daily summer visitors. At a base elevation of 1,255m, the unique European inspired walkable village is located 45 minutes from Kamloops in British Columbia’s interior. The community has a unique ski-in/ski-out public school and numerous recreational facilities.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Acts as the main point of contact for the FireSmart Program.
• Seeks and administers new FireSmart grant opportunities.
• Coordinates public education work being completed through the Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) funds.
• Recruits, coordinates, and provides training to FireSmart volunteers.
• Organizes, plans, and participates in community fuel mitigation events.
• Provides direction and assistance to implement FireSmart principles on private and community land areas.
• Coordinates FireSmart Home Ignition Assessments within the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality.
• Coordinates the implementation of the FireSmart BC Local FireSmart Collective Program.
• Recruits motivated community leaders that can be mentored to work with self-organized groups of citizens as they plan and implement wildfire mitigations in their own neighbourhoods.
• Coordinate, plan, and chair meetings with the Sun Peaks FireSmart Community Collaborative.
• Collaborates and coordinates with other BC FireSmart Committee member agencies (BC Wildfire Services, First Nations, BC Parks, etc.) in the area.
• Collaborates with Fire Department staff, consultants, and other agencies on fuel mitigation efforts around the community.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

• Completion of FireSmart 101 qualification.
• Local FireSmart Representative qualification (or willingness to obtain within 1 month of hiring).
• Wildfire Mitigation Specialist qualification (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hiring, depending on course availability).
• Completion of the Wildfire Risk Reduction course.
• Knowledge of fire prevention, FireSmart, and emergency preparedness programs.
• Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management.
• Ability to effectively deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office365 and social media application software.
• Experience with FireSmart and Wildfire Mitigation work.
• Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrates ability to deal tactfully with elected officials, co- workers, community representatives, and the public on various matters, including those of a sensitive nature.
• Demonstrates written and oral communication skills, including exceptional presentation and public speaking.
• Clear Canadian Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector check.
• Physically able to perform the duties of the position.
• Punctual, organized, and dependable.
• Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 3 or more years related experience
• Experience working in local government, structural and/or wildland firefighting, or forestry
• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent education

WORK LOCATION
A combination of office, remote, and in-community locations.

SCHEDULE
Flexible up to 38 hours/week

PAY
$30-$34/hour, depending on experience. Compensation for this position is currently under review.
