What you’ll do

The Quality Assurance (QA) Department within Engineering Services has a great opportunity for an engineer to join the team. We’re looking for candidates with a knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, testing, and inspection and test plans. As a member of this team of QA engineers and technologists, you will develop risk‑based supplier assessments and quality surveillance strategies for a wide range of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) stations and lines hardware and equipment, coordinate material quality requirements, and perform supplier evaluation activities such as factory audits and production inspections. You’ll also work with suppliers to address product defects. The QA Department establishes requirements for supplier evaluations and manufacturing surveillance, including test and inspection activities. Team members work closely with engineering teams, supply chain, contract management, construction management, BC Hydro’s project delivery organizations, and suppliers to ensure that purchased material and services meet specification and quality assurance‑related contract requirements.

This role is suitable for an individual who enjoys working on a variety of concurrent projects, tasks, and initiatives. A background in the following, or similar, engineering disciplines is desired:

• Design risk‑based quality surveillance strategies for T&D equipment and materials.
• Draw on your technical expertise to establish acceptance criteria, review and comment on manufacturer test plans, and design risk‑based quality surveillance strategies for system hardware and equipment.
• Be comfortable working in manufacturing facilities and be able to apply knowledge of test specifications and standards to ensure compliance.
• Lead the resolution of non‑conformities.
• Work closely with and provide guidance to other engineering teams, supply chain, materials management, contract management, and suppliers to ensure that purchased materials and services meet contractual requirements.
• Be a key player in managing supplier relationships, which includes evaluating proposals, performing supplier evaluations and surveillance activities, and monitoring supplier improvement plans.
• Craft well‑written reports, memos, and requirements documents.
• Review work of the team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
• Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers and technical staff.
• Balance your business sense, communication skills, and technical knowledge to deliver efficient, technically acceptable solutions when faced with challenges.
• Be self‑motivated and enjoy working on a variety of concurrent projects.
• Analyze data to assess supplier performance.

What you bring

• Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC)
• A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience
• Demonstrated strong data and analytical skills
• Experience communicating effectively to a variety of audiences (written and verbal)
• Demonstrated problem‑solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to be adaptable, flexible, and pro‑active
• Demonstrated record of using initiative and judgement to develop and implement solutions that address business and technical needs

• Experience with manufacturing and process control.
• Experience with quality processes and practices relating to equipment manufacturing (both custom and/or high‑volume production).
• A knowledge of quality assurance tools, methods, and statistical process control.
• An ability to adapt or adjust guidelines and procedures for unique or problem situations.
• A demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal development including a drive to independently learn new skills.
• Demonstrated understanding of project management, design, and contract management processes.
• Experience scoping and directing the work of service providers.
• Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, and negotiation skills.
• Experience coordinating and working with other disciplines.
• Hydroelectric, substation, and/or transmission line structure and related equipment fabrication and test experience.
• Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP) and their application to inspections and supplier oversight.
• Driver's License Type = Class 5 is required.
• P.Eng.: Professional Engineer = In Good Standing.
• This role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre‑qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre‑condition to employment.
