Employment Status Full Time Employment Type Regular Job Summary Reporting to the Director of the Learning Commons & Academic Success Centre, the Accessibility Advisor develops strategies that remove barriers to support educational success and leads CNC's efforts to increase awareness about the need, obligation, and benefits of academic accommodations for students with disabilities. The Accessibility Advisor determines the eligibility of students with disabilities for accessibility resources, services, and plans and implements and monitors individualized accommodations and supports. This role is vital for student retention and success and ensures CNC meets the duty to accommodate through a student-centred approach. This role ensures CNC complies with human rights and academic accommodation regulations. In addition to this work, the role also assists students in building solid educational plans to achieve their career goals and aids them in executing those plans. Specific Duties ACCESSIBILITY DUTIES :- Collaborates and engages with other advisors across CNC departments to ensure a consistent approach to values and service delivery.
- Performs a comprehensive needs assessment, verifies various supportive documentation to determine student eligibility for accommodations/support services, and explores options to address a student's functional limitations while upholding academic requirements.
- Develops and maintains resources to support the knowledge and implementation of academic accommodations.
- Documents and maintains accurate and confidential student records in compliance with privacy legislation and adherence with existing records management requirements.
- Facilitates the delivery of support services to students with accommodations.
- Provides information to CNC staff, faculty and the community (including prospective students) regarding accessibility support and specific disability issues.
- Recommends the acquisition and manages the use of technologies that facilitate the accessibility of students with disabilities.
- Guides students on the use of learning technologies. (i.e., speech-to-text, text-to-speech, mind maps, etc.)
- Advocates for universal design in accessibility by promoting inclusive learning practices.
- Supports students to apply for government funding, including Assistance Program for Students with Disabilities (APSD), Student Aid, Federal Grant for Services and Equipment, etc.
- Liaises with internal stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of individualized academic accommodation plans.
- Delivers information sessions and workshops that support the development of resources for faculty and staff related to academic accommodations and accessibility options for students.
- Researches and posts up-to-date FAQs on the accessibility webpage.
- Refers students to internal resources and external organizations to provide additional support.
- Works collaboratively with other Academic Success Centre staff to provide student exam accommodations.
- Prepares and submits year-end Ministry reporting.
- Remains current with legislative changes, statutes, human rights, privacy laws, software, and best practices in the accessibility field.
- Ensures major institutional events provide accessibility services as required (e.g., Orientation, Convocation, etc.).
- Participates in the Accessibility Committee and Accessibility Plan for CNC.
- Collaboratively works with Regional Campuses to support student accessibility services.
- Represents CNC at the provincial articulation group for disabilities.
- Engages with fellow advisors within CNC to maintain uniformity in values and approach, ensuring a consistent student experience
- Participates in and adheres to professional standards in the academic advising community (e.g., National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS), Centre for Higher Education Research and Development (C.H.E.R.D.).
- Utilizes a developmental advising model that motivates students to define their education and career goals.
- Assists students in understanding program admission, prerequisites and completion requirements using various advising tools.
- Supports students in identifying barriers to success and refers them to resources and services
- Assists students in navigating through the student life cycle
- Understands and supports students at critical stages within their educational journey and refers them to appropriate support services for issues that cannot be resolved through Academic Advising
- Provides information on admissions and placement testing and assists with interpretation of results.
- Provides information on career exploration and facilitates student's use of career services within the College's available resources.
- Utilizes CNC operating systems with a critical eye to assess, optimize and evaluate certificate and diploma completion requirements.
- Maintains a thorough understanding of academic and non-academic policies and procedures and assists students in understanding how these relate to academic standing and the student experience.
- Maintains knowledge of CNC programming and provides feedback through appropriate mechanisms, including committee membership, Education Council proposals, etc.
- Optimizes the student experience by providing timely feedback to student inquiries
- Maintains confidentiality through every interaction while ensuring appropriate documentation is kept accordingly
- Provides feedback and recommendations for system improvements (Colleague, Student Planner, etc.)
- Actively collaborates and participates in student information events and workshops (including but not limited to Orientation, Student Life Expo, Open house, Student Planner workshops, meet and greets, trades info tables, registration workshops, and Health & Wellness Fair)
- Maintains awareness of college-wide initiatives and latest programs and integrates new programming/pilots when possible
- Advocates for Academic Advising on CNC committees and interdepartmental meetings
- Actively pursues professional development and growth, ensuring an up-to-date understanding of regulatory requirements and aligning with the strategic priorities of CNC.
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
- Duties as assigned by the Director, Learning Commons & Academic Success Centre or designate
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) specializing in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or relevant field of study.
- 2 years or more experience working with adults with disabilities or a related field, preferably in a post-secondary setting and/or working with adult learners; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.
- Knowledge of accessibility issues, statutory obligations, privacy guidelines, knowledge of specialty software/hardware and accessibility-related resources
- Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy of adult education and customer service
- Proven ability to work positively with a very demanding workload, changing priorities, and continuous interruptions
- Proficient in appropriate technological resources, including the following computer application areas: Word-processing; E-mail, Internet, and web-based research
- Proven ability to maintain positive working relationships internally and externally
- Superior interpersonal skills, including contributing positively to a team-oriented work environment
- High degree of sensitivity to both verbal and non-verbal cues
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain student confidentiality
- Ability to effectively lead and support others to complete projects
- Ability to manage complex decisions and time-sensitive workflow
- Experience with a student information system such as Colleague preferred
