Your opportunity:

The Academic Advisor is a critical member of the team in the Registrar's Office and takes the lead in developing and delivering group sessions for incoming first-year undergraduate students. The Academic Advisor promotes a welcoming environment in the College for students from diverse backgrounds and serves as the primary advisor and is a resource for those transitioning into their first-year undergraduate programs.

As a member of the New College Registrar's Office, the Academic Advisor will be committed to an equity that recognizes, supports, and responds to the diverse histories, lived and marginalized experiences of students and many communities.

This is a full-time, term position for up to 18 months.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Advising students on the development of their educational plans
• Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
• Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
• Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
• Developing learning outcomes for workshops and/or services
• Developing content for instructional workshops
• Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
• Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services

Essential Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum four (4) years of relevant student academic advising experience in a university setting, preferably in a registrar’s office.
• Experience interpreting, applying and advising on rules, guidelines, and procedures.
• Experience and sound knowledge of best practices in advising and student services.
• Experience working with and advising international students and students from diverse backgrounds.
• Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Advanced skills with ROSI/ACORN, Degree Explorer, or other similar enterprise database solutions/CRM systems.
• Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi ‐ task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.
• Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner.
• Knowledge and understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Assets (Nonessential):

• Experience working with Faculty of Arts & Science curriculum offerings and regulations.
• Knowledge of New College.

USW Pay Band 12 -- $81,312. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $103,986. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
