Campus Minister - Mount Royal University

Chinook Winds Regional Council is seeking an individual to fill the role of Campus Minister for Mount Royal University (MRU) on a three year term at 40% time basis, 14 hours per week.

The Regional Council, as part of the wider United Church of Canada, is a decision-making body responsible to serve and support Communities of Faith within its bounds and provide necessary oversight. 

Chinook Winds Regions serves Central and Southern Alberta and supports congregations and communities of faith, and numerous other ministries including camps, social service agencies, youth and young adult work, leadership development, new ministry initiatives, property development, affordable housing and care facilities, chaplaincies and educational centres. We focus on providing services that assist Communities of Faith by maintaining good relationships between congregations and personnel. We also provide staff, finances, advice, advocacy, and program resources to ministries to enhance their work. The Regions also supports the work of General Council.

Position Purpose:

Campus United – MRU seeks to engage students, faculty, and staff at Mount Royal University ) who are looking for Christian engagement and community to support them in their day-to-day lives.

The Campus Minister is responsible for providing community, hospitality, pastoral support, leadership development, and faith formation for the university community. While pastoral care, spiritual counselling, and social activism are aspects of the ministry, the central work is to foster a vital campus community that engages participants in discernment as to what it means to follow Jesus in the context and identity of the United Church of Canada. The campus minister will function as a member of the multifaith campus team at MRU. 

Primary Areas of Responsibility 

1. Campus Ministry Development and Leadership (50% of position)

• Develop and provide leadership for programs that engage university community members in deepening their relationship with God and faithful witness as a disciple of Christ,
• Be the United Church presence to the post-secondary communities and be available regularly and visibly,
• Lead programs like bible study, worship, community suppers, social justice initiatives, and other activities that meet the spiritual needs of participants in an inclusive and welcoming community,
• If students are employed as community connectors to create opportunities to engage with students and build a United Church identifying community on campus(es), the campus minister will
  • Lead and support the student connectors in the creation and implementation of programs and initiatives,
  • Provide mentorship to the community connectors, look for opportunities to provide constructive feedback and affirmation, and
  • Assign each connector to a host community of faith (UCC) and provide leadership in building and maintaining that relationship.

2. Connection and Support (30% of position)

• Support students, faculty, and staff in the post-secondary communities in seeking relationships with UCC communities of faith around the campus in the following ways:

1. communicate what is happening at the campus(es) and how communities of faith might be involved,

2. promote events and worship that might be of interest to those at campus from the surrounding churches, and

3. collaborate on projects that support students and staff at campus.

• Provide pastoral and spiritual care for university community members. 

3. Administration (10% of position)

• Manage within budget for program and material expenses,
• Promote, share news of Campus United with UCC communities of faith and Chinook Winds Region monthly.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and life experience with 3-4 years related work experience, particularly in theology and in ministry with young people
• Continuing theological education is an asset,
• Mental Health First Aid for Adults who interact with Youth – Mental Health Commission of Canada, or equivalent,
• Emergency First Aid with CPR-C/AED,
• Commit to Kids – Canadian Centre for Child Protection, and FoodSafe, Level 1.
• Knowledge of The United Church of Canada and its organizational structures,
• Significant experience developing and leading youth groups, programs and/or networks,
• Strong leadership, organization, teaching and group process skills and experience,
• Experience working with students and young adults, particularly, experience supporting student wellness and providing emotional and spiritual support,
• Skilled at building and supporting various kinds of connected relationships throughout the university and communities of faith,
• Excellent verbal, written communication skills together with strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills,
• A commitment to always maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries,
• Solid understanding of and ability with communication and social media tools; Web design or graphic design are assets,
• Experience in successfully managing grants, finances and budgets,
• Experience in event planning and fundraising,
• Ability to obtain a sacraments license would be an asset,
• Fluency around questions of faith, and ability to work independently without close supervision or leadership.

Working Conditions

Office space might be available at the university Multi-faith Centre. Other work will need to be done from home; Sitting and viewing a computer screen for long periods, keyboarding/using voice recognition software, intermittent physical activity including sitting, standing and being on the phone for long periods of time.

Occasional attendance at evening and weekend meetings, with due notice, will be required; Attendance at Staff training (5 days) at camp Pringle in BC in the end of June each year; Most years there will be a minimum of two overnight events. In addition, most years overnight attendance at a four-day General Meeting may be required. A three-night staff retreat annually may also be required. Flexibility is required.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $28,401 to $33,227. This is based on category 7 pro-rated at 40% time on our salary range. Placement on the salary range will be based on factors such as internal equity, candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
