CLAB09H3 - Between Two Empires: The World of Late Antiquity Sessional Lecturer

A course to introduce students of history and classical studies to the world of late antiquity, the period that bridged classical antiquity and the Middle Ages. This course studies the period for its own merit as a time when the political structures of the Medieval period were laid down and the major religions of the Mediterranean (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrianism) took their recognizable forms. The following Sessional Lecturer positions are available in the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies, for the Fall 2026 academic session. This posting is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 (Unit 3). In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department's Applicant Pool: all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department within the previous thirty-six months, and all persons who have submitted an application within the past thirty-six months. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with 14:12.

Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the stipend rate for a half course (Y, F or S), inclusive of vacation pay, will be: 

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,997,48 
Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term (Six or more years as SL I): $10,699.22 
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,699.22 
Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term (Three or more years as SL II): $10,953.96 
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,953.96 
Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term (Three or more years as SL I): $11,228.90 

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications 

Completed or nearly completed PhD with a scholarly background and research in Classical Studies or Ancient History and good prior knowledge of the subject matter or related discipline with demonstrated training and ability to teach courses in the subject area.

Lecture Schedule: Wednesdays 11:00 PM - 1:00 PM

This is an in-person course, the lectures will be taking place between September 8 to December 8, 2026. The final exam can be scheduled anytime between December 10 – December 22 2026 and Sessional Lecturers will need to be available to invigilate the final exam.

Preferred Qualifications 

Strong academic record and professional promise; ongoing research and publication. Teaching ability at the university level, currency and mastery of the subject matter, past relevant teaching experience and previous experience teaching this course is strongly preferred. 

Relevant Criterion 

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position. 

Duties 

All usual duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; course syllabus development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and timely submission of grades; timely submission of a deferred exam which might happen after the conclusion of the term; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs assigned to the course, if applicable.
