Associate Director, Centre for Global Health

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which plays a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $53.3 million in research funding per year, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change, implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global health and Indigenous health, among many other areas. This past year, $10 million philanthropic dollars was raised for research, education and knowledge translation, and the over 7000 alumni were deeply engaged through events and networking opportunities. The DLSPH hosts a number of centres and institutes including the Centre for Global Health.

Reporting to the Director, the Associate Director, Centre for Global Health provides strategic, operational, financial, and human resources leadership to support the Centre’s success and growth. The role has direct responsibility for leading, managing, mentoring, and developing staff, including overseeing performance management, workforce planning, recruitment, and fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment. The incumbent provides leadership and direction to staff, ensuring that individual and team objectives align with the Centre’s strategic priorities and operational goals. Additionally, the role leads the operational development and implementation of the School’s global health strategy , and related programs and initiatives, while overseeing operations, budgets, strategic communications, and outreach activities of the Centre. The incumbent also develops and strengthens partnership agreements with national and international stakeholders, advancing the Centre’s mission and global impact. As a key advisor to the Director, the Associate Director provides recommendations on strategic, operational, and financial matters to support informed decision-making.

Qualifications

• Graduate degree in relevant area in public health or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A minimum 5 years related and progressive experience in partnership development, financial management and administration, ideally in a university or public health environment.
• Experience in developing and implementing strategic, operational, financial and staffing plans and administrative structures to support organizational growth and sustainability.
• Proven ability to lead complex operations and administrative functions, including the development and continuous improvement of business processes, systems, policies, and organizational structures.
• Experience managing budgets, financial planning, forecasting, and resource allocation, with the ability to provide strategic financial advice and ensure compliance with institutional and funding agency requirements.
• Demonstrated experience building, cultivating, and managing relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including academic institutions, international partners, government agencies, foundations, and community organizations.
• Demonstrated success leading strategic partnerships, programs, and initiatives, including monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on outcomes to support continuous improvement and achievement of organizational objectives.
• Experience with leading, mentoring and managing staff, including supervising, coaching, developing, and evaluating staff.
• Strong knowledge of and experience interpreting and applying policies, procedures, legislation, and guidelines related to finance, human resources, academic administration, research administration, and organizational operations.
• Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence, collaborate, and build effective partnerships with senior leaders, academic institutions, and external organizations.
• Strong strategic thinking, project management, and organizational skills, with the ability to translate strategy into action, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, diplomacy, and discretion when handling sensitive and confidential matters, while proactively identifying issues and implementing effective solutions.
• Proven analytical and systems-thinking abilities, including experience with monitoring and evaluation, process improvement, and leveraging technology and data management tools to support operational excellence.

Assets:

• Experience working in a school of public health or public health agency is considered an asset
• Experience mentoring and managing staff in a unionized environment and interpreting collective agreements is considered an asset.
