Important Note About Funding

This position is conditional on the confirmation of funding. While we are actively seeking and expecting confirmation prior to the start date, an offer of employment will only be finalized once funding is secured. We anticipate to know more by April 1 and value transparency so applicants can make informed decisions.

Why this role exists

Green Teams of Canada is focused on people. When people build social connections and spend time in nature making a positive environmental impact, they don’t just help the planet, they improve their own well-being.

As our Program Assistant, you play a key role in supporting this work. Through outreach, coordination, and activity support, you help engage a wide, diverse community and keep activities running smoothly. You help create experiences where every participant feels welcomed, capable and proud of the impact they’ve made.

About Green Teams Of Canada

Green Teams of Canada (GTC) is a charity founded in 2013. Our mission is to connect, build and empower diverse communities through hands-on activities that promote health, well-being and environmental stewardship. Meaningful environmental change happens when people feel connected: to each other, to place, and to purpose

We partner with governments, educational institutions, land trusts, businesses and other non-profits to deliver community environmental activities such as invasive plant removals, native species plantings and litter clean-ups. To date, we have engaged thousands of community members across the Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria, encouraging them to take care of each other and become lifelong stewards of the environment.

Key Responsibilities

Support well-run, empowering community activities

  • Support & lead organized, fun, safe and inclusive activities
  • Assist with site setup and takedown, including tents, tools, signage, and supplies

  • Engage with participants in a friendly, genuine way so they feel seen, included and motivated
  • Ensure established safety practices are followed during activities
  • Load and transport tools, supplies, and refreshments to and from activity sites

Contribute to outreach and participant engagement

  • Support outreach efforts that help reach a wide, diverse community
  • Help build and maintain outreach database
  • Email outreach contacts
  • Create engaging posts on social media platforms
  • Post activities on online calendars
  • And other creative outreach methods!

Help document and share the impact of our work

  • Capture and upload high quality photos and videos of participants
  • Support post-activity reporting and social media posts
  • Help draft participant thank you messages and follow up emails
  • Support writing media releases

Support behind the scenes coordination

  • Track participation data, feedback and basic activity outcomes
  • Support the maintenance and acquisition of supplies, refreshments and tools
  • Secure in-kind refreshments

  • Assist with other post-activity follow-up tasks

Be an engaged member of a small team

  • Follow through on assigned tasks and ask for clarification when needed

This role may be a good fit for you if you..

  • Like working with diverse people of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels and making them feel welcome and comfortable

  • Can stay calm when plans change and make decisions under pressure
  • Are reliable, organized and follow through on what you say you’ll do
  • Enjoy a mix of physical work (including lifting and moving equipment up to 50 lbs) and computer-based tasks
  • Enjoy spreading the word far and wide about opportunities in a fun and welcoming way
  • Thrive working independently while being part of a small, supportive team
  • Are comfortable working longer days when activities run

The GVGT currently runs 60+ activities per year (expected to grow) across the region, most of which take place on weekends between March-June and September-November. This role involves working from home and in-the-field activity support.

Hiring Process

To ensure a strong and mutual fit, our hiring process includes:

  • Application review (resume and written responses)
  • Virtual interview
  • Attend a Green Team activity
    • Candidates will support tasks such as set-up, welcoming participants, assisting with sign-in, supporting part of the instruction/safety talk and take down
    • An honorarium will be provided
    • This step helps candidates understand the role and allows us to assess on-the-ground skills
  • Second virtual interview with final candidates

A Note Before You Apply

We’re a small, mission-driven charity that puts a lot of time and care into recruitment, training and supporting our team and we want that investment to be meaningful for both you and us.

We need people who meet the requirements listed and are excited about both the community connection and environmental action elements of our work, and all that goes into it on-the-ground and behind-the-scenes. Please take a moment to reflect on whether this hands-on role that involves regular presence at Green Team activities and physical work feels like a good fit for you.

If you’re unsure if a role is right for you, please take a moment to reflect before applying. We’re looking for people who are eager to grow with us, not just try out a role before moving onto something else. For the right people, this is deeply rewarding work that makes a real impact in people’s lives and in our environment."

How To Apply

Please email the following to ***email_hidden*** :

  • Your resume
  • Brief written response (max 1 page) to the following:
    • What draws you to this role
    • Which part of the work you are most excited about and why
    • Tell us about your experience (paid or unpaid) leading and working with people, outdoors, and/or in community settings
    • What is your favourite food, snack or baked good and why!

Use the email subject line “GVGT Program Assistant - [Your Name]”

Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Those interested in the role are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Only those selected to move forward in the process will be contacted.

We thank all applicants for their interest in working with our organization!
