Faculty/Unit: The School of Continuing Studies, Administration & Governance The School of Continuing Studies is seeking a currently enrolled McGill student for a ten-hour contract to assist an instructor with preparing and implementing ideas for fostering equitable and inclusive classroom discussions in their course. This is further to a faculty learning community offered by Teaching and Learning Services, in which instructors discuss strategies for fostering such discussions and then prepare and implement those strategies in their own courses. This position is for 10 hours total, August 12, 2024 to August 31, 2024, to complete tasks agreed upon with the participating instructor. Eligibility This position is open to currently enrolled Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral students who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills in teaching and learning. Primary responsibilities The responsibilities of the student will vary depending on the course, but will be drawn from the following list. The student will carry out a selection from the following tasks further to discussion with the supervising instructor:

• Conduct a short literature search to identify relevant (discipline-specific) literature about equitable and inclusive classroom discussions.
• Locate course outlines online that have language referring to inclusive classroom discussions, to help inform the instructor's own framing of a similar statement.
• Provide feedback on draft instructions for an in-class discussion activity.
• Co-develop guidelines for students about participating in respectful classroom discussion.
• Summarize anonymized feedback collected from students about classroom discussions.
• Make suggestions for how an approved learning technology such as MURAL or Polling @ McGill could be used to support equitable, inclusive in-class discussions.
• Develop recommendations for students on participating in small group discussions, based on literature from the course's specific discipline.
• Observe a classroom discussion and take notes on EDI considerations to inform instructional strategies.
• If a student has taken the course in question before, read discussion-starter questions and provide feedback on what information students would need to know to participate and suggest what might impede students' participation and what might support it. The student offers feedback and suggestions for change to optimize the student learning experience for those who would be taking the class.

Skills/abilities:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 on a scale of 0-4.
• Strong information literacy skills (i.e., ability to define research terms, search online databases, journals, websites, synthesize information, and critically evaluate resources)
• Experience and/or interest working in the domain of equity, diversity, inclusion, and teaching and learning
• Organizational and time management skills
• Interpersonal skills
• Ability to take initiative
• Ability to work with Office 365 (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
