We welcome applications from motivated law students interested in gaining hands-on experience in Aboriginal law.
This role offers exposure to a broad and substantive practice, with opportunities to engage directly in files that have real impacts for Indigenous communities.
This is a full-time, in-office articling student position based in Victoria, BC. Regular attendance at our office is required to support mentorship and collaboration.
Sequoia Legal LLP is a boutique firm founded in 2024 and headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia. We specialize in Aboriginal law, serving First Nations, Métis, and Inuit clients across British Columbia and nationwide. With a team of highly experienced lawyers, the firm handles a wide-range of matters including Aboriginal and Treaty rights litigation, economic development, land-use governance, impact benefit agreements, and consultation with governments and industry. As an articling student at Sequoia Legal, you can expect to
- Work closely with lawyers on active files involving Indigenous governance, consultation, economic development, and rights-related matters
- Gain experience across a range of practice areas
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda
- Draft pleadings, correspondence, agreements, and other legal documents
- Assist with litigation matters, including file preparation, document discovery, working with experts and witnesses, etc
- Review and analyze case law and legislation
- Support client work and internal firm initiatives
- Take on increasing responsibility over the course of your articling term
- Attend internal and client meetings
- Attend court proceedings and hearings where appropriate
- Opportunities to travel to our clients’ communities
- Receive mentorship, guidance, and regular feedback from lawyers and senior staff
- Develop strong practical skills in a collaborative, team-based environment

We offer

- Monthly salary of $6,000
- Including salary paid during 11 weeks PREP
- Payment of your PREP fees

You offer
- Excellent legal analysis, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with clients and colleagues.
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous issues.
- Post-secondary courses in Aboriginal Law, Indigenous laws, or the history of Indigenous peoples of Canada is an asset.
- Currently enrolled in a Canadian law school with an anticipated completion date of April 2027
