Surrey Police Service (SPS) is Surrey’s new municipal police agency. On November 29, 2024, SPS became the police of jurisdiction, and assumed responsibility and command for policing and law enforcement in Surrey. POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Compensation Advisor to join our Human Resources Division within the Corporate Services Bureau. Reporting to the Compensation and Benefits Manager, the Compensation Advisor is a key member of the Human Resources team, providing expertise in unionized job evaluation, classification, and compensation practices.

Working closely with managers, employees, unions, and other key stakeholders, the Compensation Advisor is responsible for administering and supporting all stages of the unionized job evaluation and classification process. The position provides advice and recommendations on job content, classification, and compensation matters, while ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment with established policies, procedures, and collective agreement provisions.

Schedule / Hours of Work
This is an on-site position with an anticipated schedule of Monday-Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Please note, the hours are subject to change in accordance with operational requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and amend class specifications by conducting job analysis and interviewing employees and managers to gather information regarding job duties, responsibilities, and requirements.
• Conduct job evaluations for new and existing positions using established job evaluation methodology and processes.
• Review and assess reclassification requests and provide recommendations based on job content and established evaluation criteria.
• Provide quality assurance and consistency in compensation and job evaluation decisions.
• Communicate job evaluation and classification outcomes, including the rationale for decisions, to unions, managers, and employees.
• Participate in and conduct compensation surveys to support market analysis and compensation planning.
• Provide advice and support in the development, review, and implementation of compensation-related policies, procedures, and practices.
• Support the administration and implementation of annual compensation programs and initiatives.
• Support the job review and evaluation process for exempt positions.
• Provide compensation-related advice and guidance to managers and HR stakeholders as required.
• Contribute to compensation projects, initiatives, and continuous improvement activities within Human Resources.

• Knowledge of compensation, job evaluation, classification, and related human resources practices.
• Analytical and critical-thinking skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Knowledge of collective agreements, policies, procedures, and job evaluation methodologies.
• Research and data analysis skills, including the ability to interpret and synthesize complex information.

• Collaborative relationship-building skills with employees, managers, union representatives, and other stakeholders.
• Sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when handling sensitive and confidential information.

• Consultative approach to providing objective advice and supporting compensation and job evaluation decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, Compensation, or related field
• Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience in compensation, job evaluation, classification systems, or related human resources discipline, preferably within a unionized environment
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex job information and develop sound recommendations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate compensation and job evaluation decisions to a variety of stakeholders.
• Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered.
• SPS CLEARANCE All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

• This is a union exempt position.
• The salary range is $107,951 - $127,001 annually (Pay Band P2) based on 2024 rates. Junior candidates may be considered at a salary range of $89,817 - $105,667 annually (Pay Band P1).
