NVIT anticipates the need for a Term Instructor within the Indigenous Early Childhood Education Program (IECE) and invites applications from qualified candidates.
Job Summary/Responsibilities
The Indigenous Early Childhood Education Instructors will teach in NVIT’s IECE program. The successful candidate will be committed to a program that emphasizes the optimal growth and development of infants, children, youth, and families. This position will commence September 2026 and end December 2026.

- Possess a Bachelor’s, Graduate degree or professional credential in Early Childhood Education, Midwifery, Nursing, Child and Youth Care, Human Development, Psychology, Indigenous Health, Public Health, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, professional practice, community-based knowledge, and lived Indigenous experience may be considered.
- Significant experience supporting children and families through prenatal, infant, and early childhood stages of development.
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous perspectives on pregnancy, childbirth, child development, family wellness, and community care.
- Experience as an Indigenous midwife, nurse, health practitioner, doula, maternal-child health educator, or other Indigenous health professional is considered a strong asset.
- Education and/or experience in the area of family systems.
- Teaching skills at the post-secondary level.
- Experience with research, scholarship, community-based inquiry, program development, clinical practice, or knowledge mobilization related to early childhood, maternal-child health, Indigenous wellness, or family support services.
- Knowledge of First Nations culture.
- Ability to speak an aboriginal language (or be willing to learn).
- Understanding of Canada’s colonial history and the devastating impacts on Indigenous peoples and Indigenous ways of being and knowing.
- Practice from a holistic, culturally safe and trauma-informed lens.
- Knowledge of and appreciation for Indigenous languages and cultures, and Indigenous lived experiences.
- Proven ability to build collaborative working relationships to achieve outcomes in the best interest of students and NVIT.
- A demonstrated commitment to quality service to students and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching prenatal, infant, or early childhood development at the post-secondary level.
- Experience working with Indigenous families and communities in maternal-child health settings.
- Knowledge of Indigenous and cross-cultural birthing practices.
- Understanding of developmental screening, early intervention, and infant mental health.
- Experience integrating Indigenous knowledge systems with contemporary developmental research.
