Nature of the Position
Reporting to the Manager of Capital Projects, the Asset Management/GIS Technician is responsible for the leadership, development, and continuous improvement of the District’s GIS and asset management programs. This role plays a key part in supporting data-informed decision-making across the organization by managing spatial and asset data, advancing asset management initiatives, and delivering analysis that informs capital planning and long-term infrastructure investment. Highly technical and analytical in nature, this position requires a self-directed, motivated individual with strong critical thinking skills and the ability to manage complex data systems and projects. Requirements
- Diploma in GIS, or a related field, from a recognized institute of technology
- Minimum of 5 years’ related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ License and satisfactory driver’s abstract
- Comprehensive knowledge of GIS principles, enterprise geodatabases and ESRI tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Portal), including data modeling and administration
- Experience with spatial data collection, mapping, and integration with asset or maintenance management systems
- Working knowledge of mapping, surveying, and related technical principles
- Strong working knowledge of asset management practices and standards, with the ability to effectively and independently lead the districts asset management program
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and provide effective customer service
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently in a highly technical and analytical environment, with strong self‑direction and motivation
Preferred:
Experience in the following areas is considered an asset:
- Municipal government experience
- Administration of Computerized Maintenance Management Software (preferably Cityworks)
- Versioned editing workflows
- Python scripting for data management, automation, and analysis
- Professional certification in Asset Management through an accredited organization is an asset, as is knowledge of the CNAM Asset Management Competency Framework for Canadian Communities.
Working Conditions
This is a permanent, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. Hourly wage for the position is set at Grid 14, $45.82 - $52.95 (2027 rate) plus a competitive extended benefits package and three weeks’ vacation to start. If you are currently employed in public service, we will match your current vacation entitlement! Hours of work are from Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. This role is eligible to participate in a nine-day fortnight flexible work schedule. The District supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Code of B.C.
