Tourism and Sport - one of the Government of Alberta's newest and most exciting ministries! We lead the development, sustainability and growth of Alberta's visitor economy. We also lead the growth of Alberta's non-profit sport system as well as promote safe and welcoming environments for sport, physical activity and recreation.
The Sport, Tourism and Recreation (STAR) Division leads programming for the department. The Division is comprised of the Assistant Deputy Minister's office; the Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (SPAR) Branch; and the Tourism Policy and Strategy Branch. The STAR Division collaborates with many Government of Alberta Ministries and with a broad range of tourism, sport, physical activity and recreation stakeholders. In modeling the Alberta Public Service Values, the Senior Sport Consultant - Multisport Games has an essential role in collaborating with the SPAR branch and division team, as well as other ministries and stakeholders to obtain organizational goals.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Multisport Games, this position is responsible for the planning, development, delivery, evaluation, management and coordination of ministry programs related to the multi-sport games including provincial, inter provincial, national and international games. This is achieved through leadership and consultation in the areas of multi-sport games, coaching development, education and recognition programs, funding to provincial sport organizations and community groups.
A key responsibility for the Senior Sport Consultant will be to use a high level of interpersonal and organizational skills in working with games volunteers and committees; local, provincial and national sport organizations, agencies and services clubs, educational institutions, Canadian sport institute, the private sector, and host communities planning and operating multi-sport events. Additional Sports Consultant responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Program Administration - plan, coordinate and evaluation programs and services to meet the needs and expectations of the Alberta sport community.
- Policy Support and Implementation - working with existing policies and having the knowledge of current and emerging issues, combined with experience in the area of sport development, the sport consultant will assist in the development of guidelines and policy recommendations to further develop sport in Alberta.
- Partnership Development - share information and resources on sport development to sport organizations and other delivery agencies on both a reactive and proactive basis to ensure that Alberta has an informed sport community.
- Supervision and Coordination - coordinate efforts of staff and volunteers to assign responsibilities, priorities and schedules, while enforcing work procedures, deadlines, standards and goals within the unit to ensure quality programming.
- Financial Administration - administer the games program budgets of SPAR to ensure that expenditures reflect the purpose of the Business Plan and supports the overall operation of SPAR.
- Technology Proficiency - coordinate assigned responsibilities with related departments and games social media, website and electronic communication with stakeholders and public facing information..
- Leadership Development - support knowledge, skill and leadership development opportunities to host communities, provincial sport organizations and program stakeholders to enhance their effectiveness and enable them to be resourceful within their community, region or organization.
- Business Operations - use knowledge of the sport and political systems to provide recommendations to senior management to facilitate the resolution of current and future issues.
The sport consultant must be able to work effectively and efficiently on several diverse and complex tasks. The consultant should possess outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills. A working knowledge of computer applications (i.e. the Microsoft Office suite) is essential

Qualifications
A university degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sport Administration, or other related field, is required. A minimum of four years of related experience in the area of sport administration is required. A valid driver's license.
An equivalent combination of education and experience which includes as a minimum, completion of a recognized degree or diploma program will be considered.
Following is considered assets:
- Demonstrated experience working with local, provincial and/or national sport organizations.
- Experience working with underrepresented populations.
- Experience coordinating small and large scale events is preferred.
- Experience and proficiency with social media technology utilization.
- Expertise in a wide range of services such as technical expertise, promotion, conflict resolution and guidance to provincial sport organizations and games organizing committees, as well as groups and individuals concerned with sport development.
- Business writing, presentation skills and facilitation experience.
- Previous grant management experience.
