Up to 3 Casual Positions

The District of Saanich's Parks, Recreation and Community Services department is seeking a team player to help drive our mission of Healthy Nature, Healthy People, and Healthy Community , while supporting our vision: a Saanich where everyone belongs. You’ll work within a team where service excellence, learning and knowledge sharing, and feedback and accountability are highly valued, and where communication, trust, respect, and positivity form the foundation for everything we do.

The Recreation Division is seeking experienced and enthusiastic Instructor IIs to lead Foundations for Sport classes. The successful candidates must be confident to lead a class independently of up to 8 children, and/or lead with another instructor and up to 18 children.  These programs also include Adult and Tot class with up to 18 children with accompanying caregivers. These Foundations for Sport programs introduce young participants to fundamental movement skills and basic sport concepts in a fun, supportive, and developmentally appropriate environment that encourages confidence, participation, and enjoyment of physical activity.

Under the general direction of a Recreation Programmer or Program Technician , the Instructor II provides direct instruction and leadership for Foundations for Sport programs. Responsibilities include planning and supervising lessons, preparing equipment and activity spaces, developing course outlines, monitoring participant safety and well-being, maintaining attendance records, and creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for children and their caregivers. The Instructor will communicate effectively with participants, parents, coworkers, coordinators, and supervisors while ensuring the facility and equipment remain safe and well maintained throughout each session. These classes are delivered in a dryland gymnasium setting at G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre.

Requirements include completion of Grade 10; a minimum of three months’ experience leading camps, classes, or recreational programs; and related training or certification in sport instruction, early childhood recreation, or physical literacy programming. Emergency First Aid and CPR-C are required, and employment is subject to the provision of a satisfactory Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS) dated within the last six months. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong instructional ability, effective communication with children and parents, adaptability, and a commitment to providing safe, inclusive, and engaging recreation experiences. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Successful candidates will be required to work varying shifts, including:
  • Thursdays from 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. at Royal Oak Middle School
  • Saturdays from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Gordon Head Middle School
  • Sundays from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Pearkes Recreation Centre
Candidates are not required to work all these shifts but should be available for at least one to two of the times listed above. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Please note: If shortlisted, applicants must provide proof of the completion of Grade 10 and current Emergency First Aid and CPR-C at time of interview.
