Reporting to the Vice President, Finance & Operations, the Manager, Finance provides operational leadership for the Foundation's finance function, ensuring the delivery of high-quality financial services that support organizational strategy, donor stewardship, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making.
The Manager, Finance leads the day-to-day operations of the finance department, establishing priorities, overseeing departmental performance, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring the timely delivery of accurate financial information. The role provides leadership to the finance team while partnering closely with Philanthropy revenue generation teams, Database & Integrations, Fundraising Operations, Marketing & Communications, and People Operations to support business planning, organizational performance, and financial stewardship.
As the Foundation enters a transformational capital campaign, the Manager, Finance plays a key leadership role in cross-functional planning, financial performance monitoring, donor stewardship, continuous improvement, and organizational growth. While the Accounting Specialist serves as the Foundation's technical accounting lead, the Manager, Finance is accountable for financial governance, departmental leadership, business planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Department Management (30%)
- Provide overall leadership and accountability for the Foundation's finance function.
- Establish departmental priorities, work plans, service standards, and quality expectations for the finance team.
- Review and approve financial statements, management reports, variance analyses, dashboards, and other financial reporting prepared by the Accounting Specialist.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and identify emerging risks, trends, and opportunities requiring management attention.
- Ensure appropriate accounting policies, chart of accounts, financial governance practices, and reporting frameworks are maintained.
- Ensure monthly statements are prepared and distributed to department leaders/budget holders.
- Support the Vice President, Finance & Operations in presenting financial results, recommendations, and strategic insights to Senior Leadership, CEO, Finance & Investment and Audit Committee, Investment Sub-Committee, and the Board of Directors.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives that improve efficiency, internal controls, automation, reporting capabilities, and financial processes across the organization.
Cross-Functional Business Planning & Performance Management (20%)
- Lead the Foundation's annual business planning, operating budget, quarterly forecasting, and annual forecast processes in partnership with department leaders across Philanthropy revenue generation teams, Fundraising Operations, Marketing & Communications, Database & Integrations, and People Operations.
- Serve as the primary finance business partner to department leaders/budget holders, providing financial advice, analysis, and decision support to support achievement of strategic and operational objectives.
- Facilitate quarterly business reviews with each department, evaluating financial performance against budget, analyzing both permanent and temporary variances in revenues, expenditures, staffing, fundraising initiatives, and capital campaign activities.
- Partner closely with Development leaders to monitor fundraising performance, campaign expenditures, pipeline assumptions, revenue projections, staffing investments, and restricted fund utilization.
- Work collaboratively with department leaders to identify emerging financial risks, operational pressures, and opportunities, developing action plans and revised forecasts where appropriate.
- Lead the preparation of quarterly forecast updates and the Foundation's annual organizational forecasting, consolidating departmental assumptions into an integrated financial outlook.
- Develop financial models, scenario analyses, and key performance indicators to support strategic initiatives, campaign planning, staffing decisions, organizational growth, and resource allocation.
- Translate financial information into meaningful business insights and recommendations that support informed decision-making by Senior Leadership and the Board.
Capital Campaign & Financial Stewardship (15%)
- Provide financial oversight and stewardship of campaign funds, donor-designated assets, endowments, and restricted funds.
- Advise campaign leadership and senior management on financial implications, funding utilization, campaign performance, and long-term financial sustainability.
- Ensure campaign financial reporting supports organizational decision-making, donor accountability, and transparent stewardship.
- Monitor campaign financial performance, cash flow, and emerging financial risks.
- Partner with Development and the Database & Integrations Manager to ensure financial stewardship aligns with donor intent and organizational priorities.
Financial Governance, Risk & Compliance (15%)
- Provide oversight of the Foundation's internal control environment and financial risk management framework.
- Ensure appropriate segregation of duties and governance practices are maintained across financial processes.
- Support the annual external audit and from time to time, internal audit as requested.
- Review audit findings, management recommendations, and corrective action plans to ensure timely implementation.
- Oversee compliance with CRA regulations, AGCO requirements, accounting standards, and organizational governance expectations.
- Ensure financial policies, procedures, delegated authorities, and financial controls remain current, effective, and aligned with organizational needs.
- Support enterprise risk management initiatives related to financial operations.
Financial Stewardship & Cross-Functional Collaboration (10%)
- Ensure appropriate financial controls and business processes support accurate reconciliation of fundraising revenue, donor-designated funds, and financial reporting.
- Monitor significant reconciliation issues, financial trends, and emerging risks, ensuring timely resolution through the finance team.
- Provide oversight of restricted fund management and donor stewardship reporting.
- Ensure effective alignment between fundraising operations, database administration, accounting processes, and financial reporting.
- Build strong collaborative relationships across departments to strengthen organizational financial literacy and support sound business decision-making.
Team Leadership & Development (10%)
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development for finance team members.
- Establish team objectives, service standards, performance expectations, and accountability measures.
- Lead work planning and prioritization across the finance department to ensure organizational objectives are achieved.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, innovation, and service excellence.
- Support succession planning, talent development, and workforce planning within the finance function.

Qualifications
Education
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required
Experience
- Minimum seven (7) years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience leading budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and organizational performance reporting.
- Experience leading cross-functional business planning and partnering with operational leaders to support organizational decision-making.
- Experience supervising finance staff and managing accounting operations.
- Experience working with external auditors, governance committees, and senior leadership.
- Experience within the charitable, healthcare, public sector, or not-for-profit sector is considered a strong asset.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of Canadian accounting standards and charitable sector financial practices.
- Knowledge of fund accounting, donor stewardship, restricted funds, CRA compliance, and financial governance.

What We Offer
- Salary Range: The target hiring range for this role is $86,700 to $102,000, with ability to progress to a maximum of $117,300.
- Vacation : 4 weeks vacation plus 4 wellness days and additional float days
