Description

Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church is seeking a Finance Manager to support the church's financial administration, reporting and internal controls.  This role works closely with the Treasurer and Board of Directors to ensure accurate, transparent, and compliant financial operations.

Position Details

  • Position: Finance Manager
  • Reports to: Treasurer/Board of Directors
  • Department: Finances
  • Hours: Up to 5 hours per week
  • Work arrangements: Hybrid, with a combination of remote work and time at Bethany EMC offices

Role Summary

The Financial Manager is responsible for ensuring the church's financial operations are processed with accuracy and integrity.  This includes financial administration, maintaining records, preparing reports, supporting budgeting and planning, and helping safeguard compliance with applicable legislation and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the organization's finances, including budgeting and financial planning
  • Prepare and present financial reports for the Treasurer, Board of Directors and other stakeholders
  • Manage the receipt of grants, bequests and donations
  • Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent the misuse of funds
  • Ensure compliance with financial, accounting and charitable organization reporting requirements
  • Manage bank accounts, deposits, transfers and investment related processes within policy
  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Board on long-term financial strategies
  • Oversee annual audits and ensure accurate, transparent financial statements
  • Present the annual budget, financial reports and audits to the congregation
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Financial Team
  • Review financial transactions and reports prepared by Finance Team members

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience as an accountant or in a relevant financial management role.
  • Knowledge of financial legislation and accounting practices
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite and financial management software
  • Strong accuracy in managing number and financial records
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to see both the big picture and the fine details of not-for-profit finances
  • Ability to improve processes and lead effectively through change
  • Proven leadership and decision-making abilities in a business setting
