Vice President, Responsible AI

Reporting to the Global Chief Data & Analytics Officer, the Vice President of Responsible AI is responsible for establishing and evolving the end-to-end firmwide Responsible AI strategy and driving and influencing the implementation of technologies, tools, and best practices to improve AI governance and ensure the creation of safe and secure AI capabilities. Critically, this leader will accelerate Thomson Reuters' Responsible AI program, developing guidelines and implementing technologies that ensure AI systems are transparent, fair, and minimize bias, while prioritizing data privacy and security.
Partnering closely with all business units across TR, the VP Responsible AI will assess business needs and provide thought-leadership and tactical guidance to improve AI stewardship, model development, safety and security. This leader will deliver industry best practices at scale, creating and implementing automated risk assessments, AI inventory management, continuous monitoring, and importantly embedding Responsible AI directly into the AI model life cycle. The VP Responsible AI will ensure standards and best practices are implemented and adhered to across business functions, product teams, and business segments, while observing regulations and contractual requirements about how AI can be used across the company, including emerging regulations like the EU AI Act.
A strong customer orientation will be critical to ensure that teams are able to drive more effective business decisions and better serve end users from more accessible high-quality AI-enabled use cases, ultimately accelerating the delivery of AI at Thomson Reuters. This leader will also need to be an agent of change to build new AI disciplines and drive adoption of AI principles through influence, communication, and education. Critically, the VP Responsible AI will need to be a builder, not only transforming data & AI capabilities, but also building a high-performing team capable of rapidly executing data & AI transformation at scale.
This role will lead a 30-person team and can be based in New York, NY; Minneapolis, MN; Dallas, TX; Toronto; Canada or Zug, Switzerland.
Key Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with all parts of TR to enable a data-driven culture and create trust in TR’s data and AI assets.
- Establish the AI Responsible AI and Governance operating model (e.g., policies, standards) and enforce AI best practices while creating a frictionless experience for TR’s workforce and external customers.
- Oversee and develop appropriate governance structures for firmwide AI practices, technically and functionally.
- Maintain central repository of AI use cases across TR.
- Embed Responsible AI capabilities directly into model development, MLOps, SDLC, and related AI development practices to ensure a consistent and automated approach to creating safe, secure, and unbiased AI.
- Provide thought leadership, stewardship, and support for data product and AI use case owners across the enterprise.
- Own the Responsible AI strategy including the roll out of frameworks, tools, and technologies that integrate with TR’s broader technology stack and strategy, in support of approach to accelerating AI development and delivery for both internal use cases and customer-facing products.
- Create and automate a single unified Responsible AI program inclusive of a consistent ethical framework for use of data, Machine Learning, and AI (partnering with Legal, Risk, TR Labs, and AI platform team).
- Drive engagement and accountability across business data owners and stewards.
- Work in partnership with Risk, Privacy, Sourcing and ISRM to mature data & AI privacy, consent and risk management practices
- Prevent data & AI misuse and loss through classification and access controls as well as enforce compliance of data & AI governance, regulations, and frameworks.
- Manage data security, incident management, and continuous performance improvements – root-cause analysis, impact assessment, remediation, and operational health.
- Drive benefit definition and tracking, meeting Financial Plan targets and creating productivity improvements.
- Articulate broader business concerns and/or regulatory landscape, including key risks and controls (e.g., GDPR, EU AI Act, MIFID, SOX).
- Become a proactive trusted advisor to the Business – develop relationships with key Business and IT matrix partners.
- Serve as coach and mentor, identifying, developing, nurturing, and retaining the next generation of data & AI leaders at TR.

We are looking for an innovative, sophisticated and experienced candidate with robust AI leadership experience. The VP Responsible AI will think and act big, exercising a bias for action coupled with a thoughtful approach. They will bring hands-on experience of developing new solutions and leveraging new technologies for managing enterprise AI at scale. They will be seen as a thought leader, with demonstrated knowledge of data & AI structure, systems/tools, software, and management policies and practices. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished, innovative AI executive with a demonstrated track record of driving and delivering results with a strategic mindset. They will be a proven leader who has built and managed high performing teams, instilling confidence, focus, discipline, camaraderie, and passion within their organization.
The ideal candidate will have a deep background in managing AI governance standards and technologies that deal with large volumes of data and complex AI use cases in hybrid or cloud environments. As new technologies have emerged in AI, this leader remains abreast of best-in-class technologies and capabilities and brings experience transforming and modernizing legacy systems. The successful candidate will have experience operating in a complex global organizational environment, and will bring extensive experience leading transformational change programs. They will also have a track record of delivering improved AI management, platforms, governance, and security to the organization.
The VP Responsible AI will be an effective and credible leader, with the ability to influence and get things done through others. They will be able to communicate a vision and bring people along on a journey. The successful candidate will have strong stakeholder management skills, and will be able to engage effectively with global business functions to drive business results. The successful candidate will be an inspirational and compelling leader, who will foster an environment that supports diversity and reflects TR’s mission orientation.

- Experience driving large-scale change across a complex and global organization (breadth of complexity is important and experience handling and leading a large global organization).
- Leadership experience managing complex delivery across development to implementation and delivery to production - experience across the entire spectrum delivering solutions at scale.
- Experience leading and developing highly effective teams.
- Effective communicator, collaborator – able to work with different organizations that rely on high quality and timely data.
- Strong organization, analytical and problem-solving skills with an end-user focus.
- Ability to prioritize, self-initiate, and create momentum, even with partial guidance or information.
- Knowledge and demonstrated practice of master data management, data & AI governance practices, Responsible AI program development and business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets.
- Experience with Agile methodologies and an understanding of modern web/SaaS technologies and systems.
- Not afraid to ‘roll up the sleeves’ and seeks to go outside comfort zone to learn – pushes the team to do the same.
- Experimental mindset to drive innovation.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Library Sciences, Information Technology or a related field preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of experience with data & AI management, governance, and model risk management

Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $228,000 USD - $424,000 USD. For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $198,200 USD - $368,000 USD. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
