Who we are
At Yorkville University and Toronto Film School, we believe education is more than the pursuit of knowledge – it is a catalyst for transformation. Our mission, grounded in democratizing education, is to create access for learners from every background and empower them to achieve their aspirations and advance their careers.
We are committed to delivering rigorous, flexible programs that are both personally fulfilling and professionally rewarding, while contributing to the betterment of society. Since 2004, Yorkville has been among Canada’s few private, for-profit, fully accredited degree-granting universities, with campuses in Ontario, British Columbia, and New Brunswick. Together with Toronto Film School, we offer creative and academic pathways at both the college and university levels, cultivating a multidisciplinary environment where innovation and the arts converge.
Our community is vibrant and diverse. Many of our learners are adults balancing education with careers and personal commitments. Every member of our team – whether in teaching, operations, or technology – is dedicated to removing barriers and expanding access. Together, we deliver flexible, industry-informed learning that leads to meaningful opportunities.
At our core is human connection – guiding people to reimagine their futures in a community defined by opportunity, creativity, and growth.
Who we need
Reporting to the Manager of Student Experience, we are seeking a Program Advisor to play a key role in fostering student success, focusing on continuous progression and timely program completion of Toronto Film School programs. Collaborating closely with the Manager, Student Experience, you will ensure that students receive comprehensive support throughout their academic journey.
As part of the Student Experience team, you will cultivate a strong presence on campus, nurture trusting relationships, and proactively connect students to various support mechanisms, including academic resources, financial services, IT support, tutoring, accommodations, mental health counselling, and career services. As Program Advisor, you will contribute to a positive campus environment that empowers all team members to grow and thrive in support of our mission to champion student success.
This is an existing full-time role, working 1 day remotely and 4 days on-site at our new headquarters at 120 Bloor Street East.
What’s in it for you
Meaningful impact. You will make a measurable difference in the lives of students, helping them navigate challenges, achieve their goals, and graduate with confidence. As part of a student-first culture, your work will be valued, and your impact will be visible. You will contribute ideas, shape initiatives, and play a role in how student services evolve to meet the changing needs of learners.
A supportive and purpose-driven community. You will be part of a team committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment where students feel supported and encouraged throughout their educational journey. Whether connecting students to academic resources, financial services, or personal supports, your work will help build a community where learners feel understood, empowered, and ready to succeed.
Career development. As part of Yorkville University, Toronto Film School is a progressive, forward-thinking, innovative education centre. You will join an organization that inspires change, nurtures collaboration, supports faculty and students in their journey, and continuously innovates. You will expand your expertise in academic advising and build pathways to advance your career within higher education.
How you will make an impact
- Build relationships. You will provide excellent student service and build positive relationships with learners throughout their academic journey. As a primary point of contact, you will work one-on-one with students to understand their needs and provide thoughtful guidance with empathy, respect, and care.
- Guide academic planning. You will advise students on policies, procedures, and program requirements, ensuring they understand expectations and the steps needed to stay on track for graduation.
- Support student success. You will monitor student progress, conduct regular meetings with probation and at-risk students, and track progress on improvement plans. You will support students navigating academic challenges such as appeals, dismissals, grades, or credit deficiencies while maintaining accurate records of student interactions and outcomes.
- Connect students to resources. You will connect students with appropriate university services, including tutoring, academic accommodations, financial services, IT support, mental health counselling, and career services. You will collaborate with faculty and staff to strengthen programs and services that enhance the student experience.
- Promote engagement. You will participate in educational sessions, lead weekly Skills for Success courses, and host orientation programs that introduce students to academic expectations, campus resources, and student life. You will also attend university events that foster connection and community across campus.
- Support operations. You will respond to student inquiries in person, by email, and through ticketing systems while helping communicate campus updates and activities to the student body. You will also contribute to reporting related to student retention and reenrollment.
What you bring
- The education and experience. You have a Bachelor’s degree and experience supporting post-secondary students in an academic or student services environment. You understand student development theory and best practices in advising and student support.
- The technical skills. You have advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Teams, Excel, SharePoint, Word, and PowerPoint, with a strong ability to efficiently create, manage, analyze, and present information using these tools. Experience working with Student Information Systems (SIS) is considered an asset.
- The knowledge. You are familiar with university policies, academic calendars, and procedures, and you can communicate them clearly to students. You understand the education sector or are interested in learning more about it, including IRCC policies and their potential impact on students.
- The interpersonal skills. You are a strong communicator who can build rapport and establish trust quickly with diverse student populations. You demonstrate empathy, patience, and professionalism in every interaction and can maintain appropriate boundaries.
- The problem-solving ability. You have strong critical thinking skills and the capacity to support students in addressing academic or personal challenges. You can de-escalate sensitive situations, provide balanced guidance, and empower students to make informed decisions.
- The organizational skills. You can work independently, manage multiple priorities, and maintain accurate student records. You are detail-oriented and consistent in documenting student progress and follow-ups.
- The commitment. You can maintain confidentiality, uphold professional standards, and contribute to a student-first culture. You bring energy, care, and resilience to the role, supporting students and collaborating with colleagues to champion student success.
