Manager - Maternity and Pediatrics (Fort McMurray)

Position Overview

The Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray is offering a unique chance for a compassionate, team-oriented leader to step into the role of Unit Manager for the Maternity and Pediatrics departments. By building strong relationships with the multidisciplinary team, key stakeholders, volunteers, patients, and families and by anticipating unit needs and optimizing resources you will support daily operations and guide the team toward continued success in delivering compassionate, high‑quality care.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide leadership for the assigned units and report directly to the Director of Patient Care.
• Ensure effective and efficient operation of high‑quality, accessible, sustainable, and patient‑ and family‑focused care in alignment with Alberta Health Services' vision, mission, and business plan.
• Take direct accountability for clinical operations, assigned staff, financial resources, and programmatic requirements.
• Set and execute strategic and operational priorities for the unit in partnership with the Director.
• Develop and maintain an effective operational and financial framework that supports safe, efficient, and evidence‑based patient care, including budget development and monitoring, effecting allocation and stewardship of resources, and ensuring fiscal responsibility while meeting care and staffing needs.
• Build and sustain strong relationships with key stakeholders; support change management; promote team development and collaboration.
• Coordinate staffing and clinical work; lead recruitment, orientation, performance management, coaching, and professional development.
• Foster a positive team culture and demonstrate strong accountability to staff, patients, and families, and the overall purpose and vision of the organization.

Qualifications & Experience

• A baccalaureate degree in a health care‑related field with appropriate professional registration is required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience, including demonstrated responsibility within maternal, child, newborn, and/or youth services.
• Strong decision‑making skills in a complex, interdisciplinary environment; proven ability to manage change; capacity to develop innovative solutions to complex and diverse issues.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Current CPR certification Basic Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BCLS–HCP) is required.
• Proficiency with Connect Care and Microsoft systems.
• Master of Nursing or a related healthcare field with 3‑5 years of managerial experience, ideally in Maternity and/or Pediatrics.
• Change management training such as AIW (Alberta Improvement Way) or equivalent quality improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma) is required.
• Minimum of 2 years in a similar leadership role in a complex organization.
• Experience using Connect Care and proficiency with financial and statistical applications to support operational and strategic decision‑making.

Benefits & Compensation

Competitive rate of pay. AHS currently has a Fort McMurray Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $12,480. This allowance is non‑pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
